Tour | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Gates began Dorchester Projects in 2006 by transforming two buildings on Chicago's South Side into community gathering spaces, with a library, slide archive, performance space, and soul food kitchen. The ongoing project advances social justice through art, spirituality, history, economics, and materiality, and in so doing has charted groundbreaking ways for urban renewal.

Performance | World-class theater innovator presents Glory Road, the Woeful Myth of Sisyphus

The Nerve Tank, a world-class theater innovator, brings the woeful myth of Sisyphus to life. Sisyphus, a daring and clever king who outwitted the gods on many occasions, is sentenced by Zeus to the absurd and eternal fate of pushing a boulder uphill only to have it roll back down. The Nerve Tank’s interactive encounter with this story features a 6 1/2-foot metal sphere pushed along the Plaza, overseen by a dancing Persephone, Queen of the Underworld. Sisyphus’ labor is to play the “boulder” in narrative order, which is filled with technology that triggers audio and video fragments as it moves. The task is impossible, yet he's forced to keep going – and through his punishment he celebrates his stubborn pride. Times: 12-1:30pm & 4-6pm (20-minute performances on loop)

Dancing | VolvoTango: Outdoor Dancing

The wooden surface out on the Pier is of an exceptionally good quality. A broad healed dance shoe works fine. In damp conditions a smooth soled rubber shoe is fine and some even like to dance barefoot. The dance area is at the end of the pier under a large tent that both serves as an umbrella and a sound horn. Because of this protection and because of the polishing that regular VolvoTango events give it, the wood is silky smooth and because it's not laid on concrete, the wood is soft, there is almost a sprung-like feel to the floor.

Park Walk | The High Line Sunset Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Lecture | Thought Police: The FBI and French Philosophers

Long before emails and Prism, there was already surveillance and data gathering. J. His latest book is The Boxer and the Goalkeeper: Sartre vs. Camus (Simon and Schuster), and he is a contributor to the Opinionator column in the New York Times. The introduction to Andy Martin's talk will include stories, photographs and audio-visual recordings relating to the visits of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus to the Maison Franaise in 1945 and 1946 on their first trips to the U.S., unearthed during research for the Maison Franaise Centennial Exhibition.

Slide Lecture | There Is No Dark Side of the Moon: On the Art of Shadow

The shadow in art is a double-agent of certainty and doubt, alternately employed to describe the spatial contours of concrete reality and, conversely, to give visual form to that which is unknowable and otherwise indescribable. In this informal illustrated lecture, art historian Mark Loiacono explores the shifting function and meaning of the shadow in art, from its role in the mythological origin of painting to its current incarnation in Cynthia Daignault's exhibition, Which is the Sun and Which is the Shadow? Lecturer Mark Loiacono is an advanced PhD candidate at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and is currently in the process of completing a dissertation titled "Shadow of a Doubt: Andy Warhol's Abstractions." He has held research and curatorial positions at the Morgan Library and Museum, New York; the Dedalus Foundation, New York; and International Art & Artists, Washington, DC.

Dance Performance | Renowned German multimedia artist and contemporary Italian choreographer present NotationNotations

The world premiere of NOTATIONOTATIONS marks a first-time collaboration between renowned, multimedia artist Susan Hefuna (b. Germany, 1962) and contemporary choreographer Luca Veggetti (b. Italy, 1963). NOTATIONOTATIONS posits the idea that if a line is the trace of a point in motion, then the human body moving through the space of the observed world is also a drawing. Staged over three nights, this event will open and close with a new video installation by Hefuna of a bustling, lower Manhattan intersection—a literal mapping of people and place that examines movement as something that is both rehearsed and habitual. Sketched onto the floor will be an expansive web of chalk lines made by Hefuna (her largest work to date) in advance of an audience; its dramatic creation captured by film. The artist perseveres via the projection, which will be screened as Veggetti’s dancers gradually erase the drawn surface through repetitive, physical gestures. The performance culminates in a dynamic display of swooping whorls made by their distilled movements across the floor. The effect is its own form of choreographic documentation.

Film | Documentary: Sven Zellner's Price of Gold (2012)

This astounding film is the first to document the illegal gold-diggers in Mongolia's Gobi Desert risking their lives for a few grams of the precious mineral. While the speculative market value of gold in the Western world holds little relation to any tangible yardstick, the film describes in very direct and stark images what it means to prospect for gold by hand, in brutal conditions eerily reminiscent of the California Gold Rush during the late 19th-century. 86 min.

Workshop | Intro Class: Meditation and the Alexander Technique

With Hope Martin. The Alexander Technique and meditation practice are both about bringing awareness to habitual patterns and relaxing our goal-oriented approach to life. Applied to meditation, the Alexander Technique is a simple yet powerful tool for cultivating mindfulness of our bodies during our practice. This class will offer practical guidance on how to apply the Alexander Technique to both sitting and walking meditation (meditation instruction will be provided). We will also apply the principles to everyday actions, such as lying down, bending, and sitting at our computers. By understanding and experiencing our basic body mechanics, anatomy and alignment, we can release unnecessary tension in our meditation sessions and our lives.

Concert | Yves Klein’s Monotone-Silence Symphony, a New York Premiere

This powerful perceptual encounter will unfold over 40 minutes. Seventy musicians and singers will hold a single continuous tone for a 20-minute period. The performers then will remain frozen and motionless in observance of a 20-minute period of absolute silence. Of that soundlessness Klein wrote, “This silence is so marvelous because it grants happenstance and even sometimes the possibility of true happiness, if only for only a moment, for a moment whose duration is immeasurable.” Monotone-Silence Symphony was performed only once during the artist’s brief lifetime, on the night of March 9, 1960 as one part of the happening Anthropometries de l'époque bleue at the Galerie internationale d'art contemporain in Paris. For that event Klein conducted a small group of musicians as they played his symphony and directed three nude models – his “living brushes” – in the creation of Anthropometry paintings by covering their bodies with blue paint and pressing themselves against blank sheets of paper lining the walls and floor.
