Film | Documentary: Wagner's Jews (2013)

The German opera composer Richard Wagner was notoriously anti-Semitic, and his writings on the Jews were later embraced by Hitler and the Nazis. But there is another, lesser-known side to this story. Hilan Warshaw's documentary, examines the anti-Semitism of German composer Richard Wagner through the stories of Wagner's complex personal relationships with his Jewish colleagues and assistants. Alongside this historical drama, the film also explores the ongoing debate over performing Wagner's music in Israel. This special, one-hour screening will be followed by a discussion with panelists including the filmmaker.

Dancing | VolvoTango: Outdoor Dancing

The wooden surface out on the Pier is of an exceptionally good quality. A broad healed dance shoe works fine. In damp conditions a smooth soled rubber shoe is fine and some even like to dance barefoot. The dance area is at the end of the pier under a large tent that both serves as an umbrella and a sound horn. Because of this protection and because of the polishing that regular VolvoTango events give it, the wood is silky smooth and because it's not laid on concrete, the wood is soft, there is almost a sprung-like feel to the floor.

Known as America's first suburb, Brooklyn Heights is truly a gem. Travel and Leisure named it one of America's top 10 most beautiful neighborhoods, and its beauty is rivaled only by its place in American history. These quaint, tree-lined streets have been the sites of Revolutionary War battles, abolitionist activism and have inspired numerous novelists. Visit a stop on the Underground Railroad, or the home of Truman Capote, where he penned Breakfast at Tiffany's and where Jackie Robinson signed with the Dodgers.

Concert | Brooklyn Philharmonic presents Blues for Black Hoodies

A setting/remix of the song by rap emcee Wordisbon, composed by Randall Woolf. Wordisbon's original rap is spread out over a bed of adagio strings and turntable scratching of gospel and renaissance choral music. The text is a meditation on African American life in America, on both the personal and social level. Written 'for my soldiers, fighting in this cold war,' the piece marries hip-hop and blues into a song of Mahlerian resignation.

Film | Documentary: Sven Zellner's Price of Gold (2012)

This astounding film is the first to document the illegal gold-diggers in Mongolia's Gobi Desert risking their lives for a few grams of the precious mineral. While the speculative market value of gold in the Western world holds little relation to any tangible yardstick, the film describes in very direct and stark images what it means to prospect for gold by hand, in brutal conditions eerily reminiscent of the California Gold Rush during the late 19th-century. 86 min.
