Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Concert | Concert: The Campbell Brothers / Luther Dickinson

The Campbell Brothers present a compelling, rich variety of material from the African-American Holiness-Pentecostal repertoire with a new twist: the growling, wailing, shouting, singing and swinging voice of the steel guitar, played as you have never heard it played before. The group features pedal steel guitarist Chuck Campbell (2004 National Heritage Fellowship recipient) and his lap steel-playing brother Darick. Luther Dickinson grew up just 40 miles south of Memphis, deep in the hill country of rural Mississippi. With his brother Cody, Luther is a charter member of the North Mississippi Allstars and has recorded with an amazing array of musicians over the years: Beck, Patty Griffin, Mavis Staples, John Hiatt, Buddy Miller, RL Burnside, Lucero, Jon Spencer, and Robert Plant. Dickinson recently released his third solo album Rock ‘n Roll Blues which he describes as an autobiography set to music, tracing Luther’s journey from excitable teen to tour-van vet.

Calligraphy is one of the oldest living art traditions in the world and Wang has been intimately associated with it since early in his career, studying with the master Lin Sanzhi (1898-1989). It was from the classical training he received under Lin that he acquired the confidence to experiment with ways in which the calligraphic stroke might be liberated from the simultaneous conveyance of meaning.

Opening Reception | 2 Artists: Zachary Leener / Anne Neukamp

Zachary Leener’s latest sculptural works mark a point of departure for the artist. Dressed in a prurient midnight-blue glaze, they eschew the marbled pastel veneer that once overlaid his bawdy clay forms and introduce a darker and more dominant appeal. Anne Neukamp’s paintings, peculiar in their familiarity, distort and undermine our preconceptions of a painter’s formal vocabulary.

Opening Reception | Two Serious Ladies: Works by Peggy Ahwesh and Jennifer Montgomery

Over the years Peggy Ahwesh and Jennifer Montgomery’s individual practices have concerned similar inquiries into feminism, experimental filmmaking, genre, and cultural identity. Analogous to the two protagonists in Jane Bowles’ 1943 novel Two Serious Ladies, who each go off on personal odysseys and come back to philosophize about their experiences, Ahwesh and Montgomery inspire and reflect one another. This exhibition presents films that span a relationship of nearly 30 years in which the artists continue to return to each other in order to witness, contribute to, and perform in each other’s work.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Jennifer Louise Martin's The Absence of Presence

London-based visual artist Jennifer Louise Martin’s work provides commentary on the psychology behind an entire week dedicated to the fashion industry. Her most recent paintings in this collection displace the subject of interest in order to create a sense of detachment and ambiguity. The influence of prints and patterns from the 1960’s and 1970’s is also very evident through the inclusion of wallpaper, fabric prints, and magazine cuttings as both source material and collage additions in her pieces. The inclusion of the collage process provide insight to the underlying psychological process depicted through the materiality and language of paint.
