Described by Henry Louis Gates as “Black Britain’s leading theorist of Black Britain,” Stuart Hall was the preeminent post-colonial intellectual of Great Britain. One of the founders of cultural studies, Hall’s influence extended across the intellectual spectrum of the Left, rocking political and academic worlds with his theories of race, ethnicity, feminism, nationality, and politics, shaping their discourses into the 21st century.
Using Hall’s key essays and books as touchstones, this conference examines how his ideas can help us think through some of the most urgent problems of the contemporary moment. With ongoing crises of authority caused by police violence, mass incarceration, as well as concerns around economic, environmental, and social justice across the world, Hall’s bold theories of neoliberalism remain intensely relevant.
This conference takes place September 24-26, 2015.
