Conference | Policing the Crises: Stuart Hall and the Practice of Critique

Described by Henry Louis Gates as “Black Britain’s leading theorist of Black Britain,” Stuart Hall was the preeminent post-colonial intellectual of Great Britain. One of the founders of cultural studies, Hall’s influence extended across the intellectual spectrum of the Left, rocking political and academic worlds with his theories of race, ethnicity, feminism, nationality, and politics, shaping their discourses into the 21st century. Using Hall’s key essays and books as touchstones, this conference examines how his ideas can help us think through some of the most urgent problems of the contemporary moment. With ongoing crises of authority caused by police violence, mass incarceration, as well as concerns around economic, environmental, and social justice across the world, Hall’s bold theories of neoliberalism remain intensely relevant. This conference takes place September 24-26, 2015.

Conference | America and Its Unfit: Eugenics Then and Now

Disoriented by the “unwashed” immigrants arriving every day, New Yorker Madison Grant’s screed The Passing of the Great Race (1916) sounded the alarm for elite Anglo American Protestants. The Eugenics Record Office emerged in the breach of this Gilded Age moment of great extremes—immense wealth and immense urban and rural poverty. “Slum clearance” was framed in a social Darwinist language of progress. Forced sterilization was justified in the name of “social efficiency.” Closing the gates was their survival defense. Creating institutions segregating those deemed “feebleminded,” “degenerate,” and “unfit” was part of a new meritocratic system of social ranking. Today, how have we pushed back these top-down exclusionary policies? How does this era continue to shape our political and cultural institutions? Join us for two days of problem-posing and strategy-building. Poets, musicians, scholars, performers, writers, and organizers come together to explore what we need to do now to create change. This conference takes place on September 25 and 26, 2015.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Tour | Chelsea and the High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to city markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the city to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Book Discussion | A Discussion on Nietzsche's Anti-Education

A panel discussion with Professor Paul Reitter, Professor Chad Wellmon, and the translator Damion Searls on Friedrich Nietzsche's book Anti-Education. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Mark Greif. In 1869, at the age of twenty-five, the precociously brilliant Friedrich Nietzsche was appointed to a professorship of classical philology at the University of Basel. He seemed marked for a successful and conventional academic career. Then the philosophy of Schopenhauer and the music of Wagner transformed his sense of purpose. The genius of such thinkers and makers — like the genius of the ancient Greeks — was the only touchstone for true understanding. How then was education to answer to such genius?

Film | Documentary: Johanna Hamilton's 1971 (2014)

On March 8th, 1971, eight ordinary citizens broke into an FBI office in Media, PA. Calling themselves the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI, they removed every file in the office. Mailed anonymously, the stolen documents started to show up in newsrooms. The heist yielded a trove of damning evidence. The most significant revelation was COINTELPRO, a controversial, secret, illegal surveillance program overseen by lifelong Bureau director J. Edgar Hoover. Despite one of the largest investigations ever conducted, the FBI was unable to catch the burglars. Those responsible have never revealed their identities. Until now. For the first time the burglars have decided to speak about their actions. 1971 is their story, examining the consequences and implications of their actions - then and now. 79 min. Post-screening Q&A with Betty Medsger, Washington Post journalist and the author of "The Burglary: The Discovery of J. Edgar Hoover's Secret FBI."

Discussion | Forty Years Looking Forward: Media Studies 40th Anniversary Keynote Celebration

The social impact of mass communication has been studied at The New School since its founding in 1919. Marshall McLuhan's colleague, John Culkin, brought his Center for Understanding Media to The New School in 1975 and The New School began offering the Master of Arts degree in media studies, one of the first graduate programs of its kind. This upcoming fall 2015-spring 2016 academic year will mark the 40th anniversary of Media Studies at The New School. Today, the graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education curricula of the School of Media Studies carefully balance theory and practice, so that our students are fully engaged with current media scholarship as well as the latest tools of media production and management. Our programs prepare students to advance in almost any career direction in the rapidly evolving global media industries. In commemoration of the 40-year milestone, please join Media Studies for a night of looking back at the school’s rich and diverse history with opening remarks from David Van Zandt. Guest speakers include Media Studies founding faculty member Carol Wilder, prominent Media Studies alum Kit Laybourne, and president of School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Media Studies alum, Elissa Tenny. Reception will follow.
