Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Tour | Chelsea and the High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to city markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the city to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Staged Reading | Play Reading: The Brother - Followed by a Talkback with The New York Times' Sam Roberts

Break A Leg Productions presents this staged reading of The Brother. Written by John Hancock and Dorothy Tristan and based on the book by Times reporter Sam Roberts, The Brother looks at the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg from the viewpoint of Ethel's brother David Greenglass. Immediately following the reading, there will be a talkback with Sam Roberts, whose conversations with Greenglass formed the basis of the play. During the Second World War, David Greenglass was a U.S. Army Machinist assigned to the Manhattan Project, giving him a prime opportunity to steal atomic secrets for the Soviet Union. Recruited by his brother-in-law Julius Rosenberg, David did just that, feeling he was doing nothing wrong by providing a then-ally of the United States with such information. But when the political winds changed, and when the FBI closed in, David's only chance to protect both himself and the wife he loves dearly was to tell the authorities exactly what they want to hear, even if it meant his sister might pay the ultimate price.

Talk | What I Learned from Ten Years as a Datavis Critic

Everyone has an opinion about graphs and charts. “That’s beautiful!” “That’s misleading!” But few people have precise language to describe what they like or don’t like about data visualization. Drawing on ten years producing the Junk Charts blog, the premier source of online dataviz criticism, speaker Kaiser Fung has developed the Trifecta Checkup framework for appreciating data graphics. This framework also serves a guide for improving one’s charts, as good artists must develop a discriminating eye for the strengths and weaknesses of artwork.

Lecture | Post-Communist Mafia State: The Lessons of the Hungarian Case

From speaker Bálint Magyar: "After the collapse of the Soviet Empire, many of us lived under the illusion that communist dictatorships were going to be replaced by liberal democracies. Although the road ahead appeared to be bumpy, there was consensus that we were going through a process of a linear progression. Deviances from the norms of liberal democracies seemed to be children’s diseases rather than characteristics of adulthood. However, the chronic symptoms of such deviances caused analysts to interpret the political processes of certain post-communist states and describe their systems, which got stalled and even turned back on the road, along the liberal democracy-autocracy axis."
