Symposium | The Lives of Images (livestream)

This multi-day symposium to take up some key issues addressed in the first two volumes of the book The Lives of Images. It explores the roles, histories, and contemporary uses of reproducible images in relation to specific grounding themes. To speak of the reproducible image in this moment is to address not only photographs, film, and videos, but screen prints and billboards; GIFs, memes, and emojis—a wide array of technically mediated scripto-visual forms that together constitute and remake both our visual landscape and image economies. The Lives of Images aims to gather together recent and contemporary scholarship that helps to animate and inform a rich dialogue on the role of the image in contemporary culture. Both the series and the symposium will engage theorists, scholars, and artists whose practices move fluidly between a focus on still and moving images. Symposium discussions will range across an array of uses of reproducible images that include, but regularly extend beyond, traditional fine art. August 31-September 2, 2021

Opera | Screening of Berg's Wozzeck: Opera Masterpiece in a Park

Austrian composer Alban Berg (1885-1935) is considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century who preserved the Viennese tradition in his music. Wozzeck, completed in 1922, is his major work and operatic masterpiece. The opera is set in an apocalyptic pre-World War I environment. Enjoy the recording from the Metropolitan Opera 2019-2020 season of Berg's captivating masterpiece, directed by William Kentridge. In this performance, baritone Peter Mattei stars as the title character, the tormented soldier whose madness and paranoia ultimately drive him to murder, opposite soprano Elza van den Heever as his dissatisfied lover, Marie. Conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin. First-come, first-seated, starting one hour before the concert. All guests (aged 12+) are required to provide proof of full vaccination OR a negative COVID-19 test, taken within 72 hours of the event. All guests (aged 2+) must wear a face covering.
