Opening Reception | 2 Art Openings: Behind the dunes / por la señal | by a signal

Daniel Mato: Behinds the dunes Mato’s paintings defy belief. His freehand color shapes seep into the canvas like nebulous pools, yet their edges appear sharply precise. The surfaces––ranging from dark chromatic tones to highlights that glow like actual light––reveal their depth through transparent layers of pigment-rich paint. Edra Soto: por la señal | by a signal A series of abstract works inspired by Puerto Rican rejas, wrought iron screens which are common in the archipelago’s lower and middle-class communities. This new presentation draws from Soto's personal history and cultural heritage, examining the connections between Puerto Rican cultural memory, African and Black influences, and the colonial history of the United States.

Opening Reception | 2 Exhibitions: After / After

Pamela Flynn After An exhibition of mixed media paintings, sculptures and works on paper by Pamela Flynn. This is Flynn's third solo exhibit at the gallery. Mary Alice Orito After Orito’s monotone, monoprints are the background of EXCESS, her mixed media, solo exhibition of decay, excess and opulence. The textual inspiration of the many costumes created for the character, Miss Havisham, in the stage and video productions of Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations is the integrating element. Referencing her prior professional costume design background, Orito experiments with iridescent, acrylic paint monoprints embellished with embossment, metallic ribbon, paper placemats, pearls, sequins, and beads.

Opening Reception | Alonsa Guevara: Relatos de Origen/Origin Stories

The show features the artist’s latest series of paintings centered on exploring new beginnings and the various kinds of origin stories. These narratives include birth, but also the important moments and milestones that profoundly shape our identities, ones that often result in a sense of rebirth. Guevara’s paintings connect these personal accounts with archetypal tales that have resonated throughout humanity for millennia in order to tap into the collective unconscious, revealing the shared emotions that connect us all to our origins. Guevara’s artistic journey began in the Ecuadorian jungle where she spent her formative years developing a profound respect for nature and learning the magical legends that warned of the jungle’s dangers. The artist incorporates the country’s native flora into her imagery to honor her upbringing while also recognizing her Chilean heritage through representing vegetation such as Chile’s national flower, Copihue (Chilean Bellflower); and national tree, Araucaria Araucana (Chilean Monkey Puzzle). To continue the commemoration of new beginnings upon her life path, Guevara integrates natural elements representative of the other countries that she has called “home” including the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Guevara’s compositions feature a vibrant blend of elements from nature interlaced with ethereal, human-like figures to portray a deep connection between humanity, nature, and spirituality. Her artistic process begins with unique monotype prints, in which spontaneous brushstrokes on a wet surface are pressed onto canvas. Shapes and objects emerge organically from within the unexpected interactions of paint. With a Magical Realist style, Guevara delves into themes of miraculous birth; family union and the promise of new beginnings; desire and sexuality; growth; resilience and transformation; death; rebirth and the continuity of the cycle of life. This series invites viewers on a journey through the wide array of "Origin Stories” with each painting serving as a portal that reveals how our shared experiences inform our identities and unite us in the richness of life.

Opening Reception | Jacob Lawrence: Builders

An exhibition of paintings, drawings, and prints spanning from 1974-2000. Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) is an iconic presence in 20th century art. He uniquely harnessed the power of the figurative, the narrative, and the abstract to address major social and philosophical themes. His engagement with African American subject matter was groundbreaking. During the last three decades of his life, Lawrence consistently pursued the subject of Builders, an unparalleled commitment within his work. A continuation of his dedication to themes from daily life, the Builders are a manifestation of his belief in human agency and the dignity of work. The Builders symbolize a variety of ideas about life and work, particularly in Black communities. Altogether, the Builders paintings are philosophical reflections on the human condition, addressing the role and responsibility of all people to the improvement of society.

Opening Reception | Liza Lou: Painting

A series of abstract works on canvas in which the artist explores the most singular feature of a painting—the brushstroke. Activating the intense chroma and refractive qualities of glass beads, Lou uses her signature material to flow and coagulate into a new form of paint, applying beads in free-form gestures through an intuitive approach. As they collide and overlap on the canvas, Lou’s beads reconstruct strokes of paint, an often-fetishized aspect of mid-century American Abstraction. At close range, the tiny, individual 3-dimensional pieces of factory-made color jostle each other, resulting in micro explosions that register as surprise and offer a new take on American Abstract painting.

Opening Reception | Mike Cloud: Holistic Abstraction

Mike Cloud’s new body of work developed during his fellowship at the American Academy in Rome earlier this year. Retaining key features of his practice, Cloud expands his concept of painting’s intricate relationship with death to now embrace - though from an impersonal perspective - the full range of human experience.  In these new paintings, Cloud replaces traditional wooden stretcher bars with handmade mops, which he has fashioned from broomsticks and tattered canvas strips. These mops are structural elements taking on the shapes of stars, arrows, fish or others.  Cloud continues his practice of roughly stapling his canvas surfaces onto their wooden supports in a way that leaves the structure slightly visible, undermining painting’s authoritative status in its inviting DIY ethos and turning it into an object instead of a pristine, level surface.  The mop structures crisscross at irregular angles and often multiple times, creating mosaic-like, collaged surfaces describing iconic forms. The extending mop heads bestow an air which veers between festive and ridiculous, pom poms and scare crows and also allude to the African American wedding tradition of “jumping the broom”. The artist has used totemic shapes as painting structures before, but here the paintings resist hanging flat against the wall to a degree that transmutes the works into "standards", portable flags or signs that can be carried into different contexts, such as battles, processions or protests.

The exhibition features work by Matt Coombs, Anna Gregor, Annie Grossinger, Petros Lales, Nicole Mouriño, Supermrin, and Dave Walsh.

Opening Reception | Santi Moix: Future Flora

Santi Moix’s new monoprints are suffused with life. Plush blooms of flowers and threads of dots become intertwined, often radiating from the center of the compositions, or lying evenly in swaths of saturated color. In many of the works, the flowers’ stems are crowded with little emblems which Moix refers to as his “Pictionary,” a term he coined to describe his idiosyncratic lexicon of figurines – abstract, insect-like, or botanical, and all unique imaginary shapes.   Future Flora is a continuation of Moix’s exploration of beauty and ephemerality, as it draws from previous bodies of work published with Pace Prints: Hanabi (2019), inspired by the firework festival in Nagaoka, Japan; and Rippling (2012), which the artist named for the effect produced by the spontaneous layering of silkscreens. Moix incorporates motifs of drooping blossoms and barbed leaves tinged in melancholic blue that appear as gentle reminders of the inevitable condition following energetic bursts of life.   Future Flora presents new worlds, lush with the biota of Santi Moix’s mind, where beauty and vibrance encourage us to embrace the cyclical nature of our own experience.

A new series of paintings and video installation by Wangari Mathenge in which she observes her own sleeping body to derive profound, personal insights into the nature of altered states of consciousness. This recent work depicts her experience of two particular psychological phenomena: hypnagogia, the transition from wakefulness to sleep, and hypnopompia, the transition from sleep to wakefulness. Amidst semi-lucid dreams, her senses distort, even merge, the physical and fantastical, incurring a heightened sensation of euphoria.

Book Discussion | A Termination: Young and Sexual in the 1960s

In 1969, Honor Moore was twenty-three, a theater student yearning for love and working for radical change, but studying administration and keeping secret, even from herself, her wish to imagine the world by becoming a poet. There was an older lover, a professor, and, with another man, an unwanted sexual encounter. That spring, she had an abortion. A Termination is the story of the young woman who made that decision, and of how that act of resistance, then shrouded in fear and silence, has reverberated throughout her life since. Angry, nostalgic, questioning, and romantic, the memoir pursues the associations of memory, moving from the New Haven of Yale Drama School, the Living Theatre and the Black Panthers; to the New York City of theater, jazz, and the Chelsea Hotel; the Berkshires of rock and roll at Tanglewood, and Chicago in the wake of the 1968 Democratic Convention. Framing the story is a self-portrait of the author fifty-five years later, a woman with a sexual past, a poet who has made her own way. A lyric, searching memoir, A Termination asks what it means to write with full honesty about one's life--to explore who we were, and how our choices shape and allow who we become.

Film | UnBroken (2023): A Family's Survival After Auschwitz

This documentary chronicles the plight of the seven Weber siblings who, following their mother's murder at Auschwitz, evaded certain capture and death as mere children in war-torn Nazi Germany. After being hidden in a laundry hut by a benevolent farmer, the children spent two harrowing years on their own. Emboldened by their father's mandate that they 'always stay together,' their saga culminates in a painful ultimatum: for that which would save them, would also tear them apart. Filmmaker Beth Lane, daughter of the youngest Weber sibling, embarks on a quest to retrace their steps, seeking answers to long-held questions about her family's survival. The film examines the journey of the Webers as told through conversations with living siblings - now in their eighties and nineties - while Beth and her crew road trip across Germany, following the courageous, tumultuous, and harrowing path taken by her family over seventy years ago. Following the film there will be a brief Q&A with director Beth Lane. Run time: 1h 43m

Concert | Accordions Around the World with 2024 Grammy Award nominee and "America's Hottest Accordion" winner (in the Park)

This annual celebration of accordionists returns with a rare New York City appearance from the Louisiana-based, three-time Grammy-nominated Zydeco star Dwayne Dopsie as well as Latin funk steeped in Dominican styles of music from Afro Dominicano and and powerhouse Haitian collective Lakou Mizik. 2024 Grammy Award nominee and "America's Hottest Accordion" winner, Dwayne Dopsie plays high-energy zydeco that keeps you wanting more. Dwayne hails from one of the most influential Zydeco families in the world. Although inspired by tradition, he has developed his own style that defies existing stereotypes and blazes a refreshingly distinct path for 21st century Zydeco music. Dwayne attributes his musical abilities to his father, Rockin' Dopsie, Sr., a pioneer of Zydeco music. He has played the accordion since age seven and states, "This is my calling - Zydeco music is in my blood and it is my heart and soul." This singer/songwriter and accordionist has performed in 40 countries and also in hundreds of cities across the United States, Europe, Brazil, Panama and Canada since debuting his band at age 19. The funk-fusion combo Afro Dominicano infuses their songs with Afro-Caribbean soul: a blend of Dominican folkloric styles and pop influences that includes merengue, bachata, samba, reggae, punk and R&B, all filtered through a uniquely New York sensibility. The group's mix of sweet vocals, accordion, guitar, traditional percussion and electric bass sparks high-energy riffs and romantic balladry that eludes the pigeonhole of genre in favor of genuine human connection. The social justice-inspired collective of Dominican-American musicians celebrates the forthcoming release of their newest album with a night of fresh jams and good times, featuring music by DJ Bembona. Lakou Mizik is a powerhouse collective of Haitian roots music with a soulful energy and a mix of styles that feels mystical and familiar at the same time. In the wake of Haiti's devastating earthquake the band came together to show the world that their country was much more than the sum of headlines that were being shot around the globe. Today with their positive messages and roots revival music, they have become one of Haiti's hottest exports and have gained an international following with their critically acclaimed debut album Wa Di Yo and their mystical, soulful, dance party inducing live shows.
