Opening Reception | 2 Photography Shows: Joanne Leonard / Brittany Nelson

A two-person exhibition of photographers Joanne Leonard and Brittany Nelson, which will be on view. This presentation will mark Leonard’s first exhibition with the gallery and Nelson’s second show with the gallery. Joanne Leonard’s photographs of interiors are celebrations and examinations of the cacophony of domestic settings and many of the now-obsolete technologies of the mid-twentieth century. Shot in the late 1970s and early 1980s, these kitchens, laundry rooms, and bedrooms are filled with the entanglements and jumbled ephemera of lived-in spaces – a sphere that is historically associated with the feminine domain. The images are subtly threaded with the hectic happiness of life and family, and yet they read as crowded, confining, and overwhelming. Leonard’s use of light, and her balance of rich blacks and greys, bring a softness to these images and add a loving caress of appreciation to the overlooked appliances and products of the quotidian. In contrast to these familiar and object-saturated interiors, Brittany Nelson’s photographs are otherworldly, with horizons expanding beyond our planetary borders. Nelson often turns to outer space in her work, employing it as a metaphor for queerness – exploring ideas of isolation and the need for human connection. The works on display in this presentation are from the Allen Telescope Array series, made while Nelson was in residency at the SETI Institute, an organization that is dedicated to searching for life in the universe. While there, she photographed the 42 antennas that compose SETI’s enormous telescope array, roaming the grounds alone at night with a medium-format camera and reversing the telescopes’ outward gaze by searching for them with a hand-held light source. The resulting photographs are at once shocking and soothing; while the enormous scale of the dishes is intimidating, their frontality and open presence imbue them with a sense of acceptance and even trust in the viewer, almost as if they were beings themselves.

Book Discussion | Betting Against America: The Axis Powers' Views of the United States (online)

Why did Axis countries go to war against America? Given America's industrial base, what was the rationale that underpinned their decision? This new analysis by a seasoned intelligence officer, based mainly on German, Italian, and Japanese sources, offers a "red team exercise," taking the viewpoint of the leaders of the Axis powers, looking at the build up to their war against America, and the course of the war itself. It identifies the moments when their leaders realized America and its American-supplied Allies were going to beat them. With author Harry Yeide.

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: Dreamscaping in a Fool's Paradise

Carlos Mateu, born and raised in Havana, Cuba, has been inspired by a rich culture of art and music since childhood. He studied fine arts at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Art in Havana, and worked as an artist and designer of international exhibitions. Since coming to the US in 1997, he has exhibited his art extensively, and also works as a graphic designer. He was commissioned to produce a series of murals, paintings and logos for schools, private business and various popular restaurants in NYC like Guantanamera, Toloache, Cuba, Café Cortadito, Havana ”Alma de Cuba,” and Agozár, etc. He calls his style geometric pop. His paintings fuse elements of cubism with realism, using straight lines and perspective to create a geometric and three-dimensional effect, while subtly deforming the images. Intense colors of acrylic are applied in layers like silkscreen, creating clean and precise divisions between tones, textured further with oil pastel. His subject matter incorporates surrealism and mysticism to reflect the Afro Cuban life and religions, memories of Cuba, his life in the United States and his own creative perspective on the world around him.

Book Discussion | French Fantasy Author in Conversation

International bestselling authors Victor Dixen and Clarence A. Haynes as they discuss The Court of Shadows and The Court of Miracles, the first two installments in Dixen’s historical fantasy series Vampyria (trans. by Françoise Bui). Dixen and Haynes will also address how vampires are always relevant, from 19th century bloodsucking classics (Dracula, Carmilla) to the most recent exciting screen adaptations (Interview with The Vampire and Castlevania TV series). Louis XIV transformed from the Sun King into the King of Shadows when he embraced immortality and became the world’s first vampire. For the last three centuries, he has been ruling the kingdom from the decadent Court of Shadows in Versailles, demanding the blood of his subjects to sate his nobles’ thirst and maintain their loyalty. In the heart of rural France, commoner Jeanne Froidelac witnesses the king’s soldiers murder her family and learns of her parents’ role in a brewing rebellion involving the forbidden secrets of alchemy. To seek her revenge, Jeanne disguises herself as an aristocrat and enrolls in a prestigious school for aspiring courtiers. She soon finds herself at the doors of the palace of Versailles. But Jeanne, of course, is no aristocrat. She dreams not of court but of blood. The blood of a king.

Concert | Canciones en Blanco y Negro: Traditional Argenitinian Ballads, American Classics, Latin Jazz and More

The Argentinian-born, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Juana Luna's omnivorous musical influences effortlessly span traditional Argentinian romantic ballads, tried-and-true hits of the American Songbook, coquettish samba, rousing boleros, and Latin jazz. Her lilting voice recalls great vocalists like Caetano Veloso and Magos Herrera. Luna celebrates the release of her sophomore album, Canciones en Blanco y Negro (Songs in Black and White), which she'll perform in its entirety. The culmination of two focused years of production and songwriting, Canciones tells a story of those who are driven by love. It's a record for those who may feel lost, but believe that's not such a bad thing. Luna presents these love stories alongside a band that features guitarists Asher Kurtz and Federico D?az, bassist Sebasti?n de Urquiza, a string quartet and very special guests.
