Lecture | Forms Serving Functions: Coins and Medals as Judaica

Numismatic imagery has mirrored and illuminated many facets of Jewish culture for centuries. The current exhibition, Jewry Reflected, Refracted, and Recorded on Medals, and this presentation based on it, highlight the wide variety of forms and functions that Jewish coins, tokens, and medals have assumed over the centuries. Having served as active agents, as actual participants, in the religious and social lives of Jewish people both in the Holy Land and in the Diaspora, they incorporate and constitute material evidence of past Jewish experience. Speaker Ira Rezak is a retired physician and educator who has studied and collected Judaica for many years.

Dance Performance | Hot Hands: 6 Dancers Evoke Childhood

A performance conceived and choreographed by the artist Madeline Hollander in conjunction with the exhibition Growing Sideways: Performing Childhood. Hot Hands features six dancers and draws choreographic inspiration from the reflex-driven hand game of its title, as well as other archetypal clapping games found across the globe. The collaborative piece taps into the dancers' muscle memories and childhoods, and playfully explores the corporeal vocabularies articulating fake-outs, flinches, anticipation, concentration, keeping score, and breaking rules. The installation presents 6 locally sourced inverted tables that have been converted into "roundabouts," a revolving piece of playground equipment. These spinning structures inform the dancers' trajectories, with arrows indicating their next move as they cycle through the game ad infinitum. Viewers are invited to come and go as they please throughout the performance. Performers: Eloise Deluca, Marielis Garcia, Peter Mazurowski, Frances Samson, Vinicius Silva

Book Discussion | Jewish Space Lasers: The Rothschilds and 200 Years of Conspiracy Theories (online)

For more than 200 years, the name "Rothschild" has been synonymous with two things: great wealth, and conspiracy theories about what they're "really doing" with it. Almost from the moment Mayer Amschel Rothschild and his sons emerged from the Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt to revolutionize the banking world, the Rothschild family has been the target of myths, hoaxes, bizarre accusations, and constant, virulent antisemitism. Over the years, they have been blamed for everything from the sinking of the Titanic, to causing the Great Depression, and even creating the COVID-19 pandemic. Author Mike Rothschild's book is a deeply researched dive into the history of the conspiracy industry around the Rothschild family - from the "pamphlet wars" of Paris in the 1840s to the dankest pits of the internet today. The journalist and conspiracy theory expert, who isn't related to the family, sorts out myth from reality to find the truth about these conspiracy theories and their spreaders. Who were the Rothschilds? Who are they today? Do they really own $500 trillion and every central bank, in addition to "controlling the British money supply?" Is any of this actually true? And why, even as their wealth and influence have waned, do they continue to drive conspiracies and hoaxes?

Discussion | The Shaker Experience and the Broader Immigrant Story

A panel of speakers representing the Museum, Shaker Museum, Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, and Immigrant & Non-Citizen Rights Clinic will come together for an engaging panel discussion on the immigrant experience. This conversation will explore the origins of immigration and how they illuminate or contrast with the present and future.  Drawing inspiration from the 250th anniversary of the Shakers arriving in New York City in 1774, as well as the journey of over six million immigrants who passed the 1908 lightship Ambrose on their way into New York Harbor, we will compare the Shaker experience with the broader immigrant story. We’ll also delve into the surprising commonalities among the many waves of immigrants who have come to New York City in search of a new life. Following the panel, we’ll open the floor for an audience Q&A.
