Opening Reception | Brandon Ndife: Clearance

Ndife’s material transformations cultivate an intimate dissonance between the natural and the manufactured, nesting organic shapes (branches, roots, and gourds) within sculptural shells that resemble domestic furniture—ingeniously hand-built to evoke the mass-produced items that order our private lives. His work confounds the lifecycle of consumer objects with its uncanny mix of ripening and rot, and functions for the artist as a conduit to broader systems of uneven distribution. The exhibition design embeds the work in a sprawling environment that recalls a city street, where discarded items left curbside are vulnerable to weathering and prying eyes, yet also made available to fresh encounter—to change hands and find new use.

Opening Reception | Divine Violence: 3-Artist Show

Divine Violence is conceived around “Jin, Jîyan, Azadî (ژن، ژیان، ئازادی),” or “Women, Life, Freedom.” Not just a slogan; “Jin, Jîyan, Azadî (ژن، ژیان، ئازادی),” is the discourse that came to light following the killing of a woman, Mahsa Amini, at the age of 22 by morality police in Iran. The phrase defines the actions taken by women toward freedom and gender equality in the Islamic state. The death of Amini, was the sacrification of the woman, which is both sanctified and cursed. In other words, the finger cut by the Sharia doesn’t hurt. The action ignited the feminist revolutionary struggle in Iran.  This exhibition seeks to investigate the ordinary and extraordinary emancipatory actions for women’s lives and freedom in the Middle East from post-revolutionary Iran to today.. Moreover, this exhibition will provide an alternative reading of Middle Eastern history through the lens of Islamic feminism and feminist solidarity. The controversial role of Middle Eastern women in the Islamic world will be critiqued.. The geography of violence will be reinterpreted through the narratives, realities, testimonies, and distorted memories in Islamic feminist history.  The exhibition brings together an artist/lawyer SB Arch Lab, a researcher/curator Gülistan Kenanoğlu, and an artist/architect Çağlar Hanaylı who stand opposite the feudal, sexist, and patriarchal system. Through their similar stories and the stories they have witnessed they will reinterpret Islamic feminist history through the lens of women’s liberation.

Film | Mikey and Nicky (1976): Unusual Gangster Drama

Elaine May's gangster drama, Mikey and Nicky, has polarized audiences since its release. It bombed at the box office, and critics like John Simon considered it "one of the worst pictures of 1976." Some years later, Stanley Kaufman hailed it as "one of the ten best pictures of the decade." Although it alienated the mass audience that Hollywood films are normally designed to please, it has engaged a coterie of devoted fans for almost 50 years, with revival screenings at MOMA, the Lincoln Center, and countless other venues. Film scholar Todd Berliner will explain the film's unusual appeal and May's unorthodox directing methods on the notoriously troubled production. Elaine May couldn't make a professional Hollywood movie, so instead she made a masterpiece.

Book Discussion | Survival is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde by Alexis Pauline Gumbs

Author Alexis Pauline Gumbs will discuss her new book, Survival is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde, with Cara Page. We remember Audre Lorde as an iconic writer, a quotable teacher whose words and face grace T-shirts, nonprofit annual reports, and campus diversity-center walls. But even those who are inspired by Lorde’s teachings on “the creative power of difference” may be missing something fundamental about her life and work, and what they can mean for us today. Lorde’s understanding of survival was not simply about getting through to the other side of oppression or being resilient in the face of cancer. It was about the total stakes of what it means to be in relationship with a planet in transformation. Possibly the focus on Lorde’s quotable essays, to the neglect of her complex poems, has led us to ignore her deep engagement with the natural world, the planetary dynamics of geology, meteorology, and biology. For her, ecological images are not simply metaphors but rather literal guides to how to be of earth on earth, and how to survive―to live the ethics that a Black feminist lesbian warrior poetics demands. In Survival Is a Promise, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, the first researcher to explore the full depths of Lorde’s manuscript archives, illuminates the eternal life of Lorde. Her life and work become more than a sound bite; they become a cosmic force, teaching us the grand contingency of life together on earth.

Book Discussion | Everything/Nothing/Someone: Coming-of-Age Memoir with Glamor, Excess and Neglect

A remarkable memoir that tells of a young woman's coming-of-age amid glamor, excess, and neglect, and the love affair that, against the odds, allows her to save herself. Alice Carrière grew up in a converted factory in Greenwich Village in the 1990s, an extravagant home based on the hyper-aestheticized vision of her artist mother, Jennifer Bartlett--with two studios, an indoor swimming pool, a rooftop garden with a koi pond, and multiple, cavernous rooms through which a steady stream of visitors flowed. Alice's iconoclastic European father was a fleeting, atmospheric disturbance. Alice grows up as a child living in an adult's world, with little-to-no boundaries or supervision. As she enters adolescence, a dissociative disorder erases her identity, and overzealous doctors medicate her further into madness. In the absence of self, she inhabits various roles: as a patient in expensive psychiatric hospitals, the ingenue in destructive encounters with older men, a provocateur who weaponizes intellectual dazzle and outrageous candor--until a medication-induced psychosis brings these personas crashing down. Finally, a soulful connection with a generous and sensitive musician allows her to free herself from the pathologies that defined her and recognize her true self. With gallows humor and brutal honesty, Carrière has written a unique and mesmerizing narrative of emergence and, at last, cure.

Book Discussion | Quarterlife: A Novel of the New India

The Bharat Party has come to power in India after an intensely divisive election. Naren, a jaded Wall Street consultant, is lured by its economic mandate to return to Mumbai. With him is Amanda, eager to escape her New England town through a teaching fellowship in a Muslim-majority slum. Meanwhile, Naren's younger brother Rohit sets out to explore his cultural roots in the country's heartland, where he ends up befriending the fiery young men who feed off the Hindu nationalist machine. From identity politics to corporate avarice to the limits of idealism, each of these characters embodies a hypothesis. As they come to grips with the new India, they also become aware of a deeply fraught and complex milieu. The result is an ever-widening story that builds up to a festive night when all of Mumbai is on the streets, and the simmering unrest erupts. Devika Rege's Quarterlife is as much a social and philosophical inquiry as a political bildungsroman. It is also a brilliantly innovative and ambitious work that tests the limits of what the novel can achieve.
