Film | The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) Directed by Wes Anderson, Starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and More

Royal Tenenbaum and his wife Etheline had three children, and then they separated. All three children are extraordinary -- all geniuses. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. Most of this was generally considered to be their father's fault. The Royal Tenenbaums is the story of the family's sudden, unexpected reunion one recent winter. Director: Wes Anderson Cast: Danny Glover, Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Bill Murray, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson Wes Anderson is an American filmmaker. His films are known for their eccentricity, unique visual and narrative styles and frequent use of ensemble casts. They often contain themes of grief, loss of innocence, and dysfunctional families. Some critics cite Anderson as a modern-day example of an auteur. Three of his films have appeared in BBC Culture's 2016 poll of the greatest films since 2000. Gene Hackman is an American retired actor. In a career that spanned more than six decades, Hackman won two Academy Awards, four Golden Globes, and more. Hackman's two Academy Awards wins include one for Best Actor for his role as Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle in William Friedkin's acclaimed thriller The French Connection (1971), and the other for Best Supporting Actor playing "Little" Bill Daggett in Clint Eastwood's Western film Unforgiven (1992). Anjelica Huston is an American actress, director and model known for often portraying eccentric and distinctive characters. She has received multiple accolades, including an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for three British Academy Film Awards and six Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2010, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Gwyneth Paltrow is an American actress and businesswoman. She is the recipient of various accolades, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award. Paltrow gained notice for her early work in films such as Seven (1995), Emma (1996), Sliding Doors (1998), and A Perfect Murder (1998). She garnered wider acclaim for her performance as Viola de Lesseps in the historical romance Shakespeare in Love (1998), which won her several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actress. This was followed by roles in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Shallow Hal (2001), and more. Ben Stiller is an American actor, filmmaker, and comedian. Stiller was a member of a group of comedic actors colloquially known as the Frat Pack. Throughout his career, he has received various awards and honors, including an Emmy Award, a Directors Guild of America Award, and more. Owen Wilson is an American actor. He has had a long association with filmmaker Wes Anderson with whom he shared writing and acting credits for Bottle Rocket (1996), Rushmore (1998), and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), the last of which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay. Wilson also starred in the Woody Allen romantic comedy Midnight in Paris (2011) as unsatisfied screenwriter Gil Pender, a role which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination.

Discussion | Hearing Cuban Voices in a Time of Crisis

The late historian Elizabeth Dore spent the last 20 years directing “Cuban Voices,” a Ford Foundation-sponsored oral history project collecting memories of the Cuban Revolution. In 2023, Duke University Press published her posthumous book, How Things Fall Apart: What Happened to the Cuban Revolution, which tells modern Cuba’s story through the lives of seven islanders from the post-Soviet generation. The 15-year project, which involved a large team of Cuban interviewers and over 100 interviewees, faced many challenges, including difficulty finding a publisher for Dore’s controversial findings. “The ghost of Oscar Lewis kept me awake at night,” she notes wryly in the book’s opening pages. Following Dore’s death in 2022, her children donated the project archive to Columbia University, where it is now digitally available to the public. A lifelong socialist and principled scholar, Dore was dedicated to hearing diverse, critical, and often contradictory Cuban voices describing the Revolution’s challenges, rewards, and dilemmas. Her book captures the voices of those who built, supported, opposed, and even fled the Revolution. This initial panel, the first of three inspired by Dore’s work, will focus on Dore’s personal and political history and intellectual legacy (Brooke Larson), an analysis of How Things Fall Apart (Ted A. Henken), and an introduction to Columbia’s “Cuban Voices” oral history collection by the archivist who prepared it for public access (Flor Barceló).

Discussion | Pushing Columbus, Jefferson, Bismarck, & Co. Off the Pedestal?: Current Conflicts in Memory Cultures and the Politics of History

A public talk and conversation with Sabine Sielke (University of Bonn) and Marita Sturken (NYU). Statues of famous figures in world history are currently under severe attack; and this ,,iconoclasm" is by no means a new phenomenon. Yet while some activists promote the quick disposal of monuments honoring characters whose heroism appears questionable in hindsight and whose display is deemed to reaffirm racism, others fear that along with contested sculptures, our sense of history gets disposed and we become all too forgetful. This talk marks some of the frontlines of the so-called "culture wars" whose concepts and strategies get adapted from US-American debates for incomparable historical contexts on foreign turf.

Lecture | Danish Architecture Studio on the Dialogue Between Place and Form (in-person and online)

Throughout the last 25 years, Danish architecture studio Dorte Mandrup has specialised forming architecture in places that require a high degree of consideration and care. From spectacular and fragile landscapes to sites that grabble with troubled and uncomfortable historical events. With a highly contextual, artistic and analytical approach, the studio manages to form unique architectural concepts that underlines the place, highlighting its inherent qualities and creating new relevance. In this lecture, founder and creative director Dorte Mandrup will discuss the importance of context in the studio’s work and how they use the entire situation – both its tangible and intangible elements – as a conceptual starting point for each design. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A. Danish architect Dorte Mandrup founded her eponymous studio in 1999, eight years after graduating from Aarhus School of Architecture. Studies in both sculpture and natural sciences have influenced her approach, which is hands-on, materialising in deep contextual analysis and explorative prototyping. Her Copenhagen-based studio employs an artistic, humanistic, and scientific approach to create playful, original, and poetic designs that are enhancing the awareness and experience of each place. In recent years, the studio has distinguished itself in the architectural field with extraordinary projects like The Whale in Norway, the Exile Museum at Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin, Nunavut Inuit Heritage Centre in Canada, and Ilulissat Icefjord Centre on the edge of the UNESCO-protected Kangia Icefjord in Greenland.

Book Discussion | The Lucky Ones: A Muslim Family in India (in-person and online)

In 2002, Zara Chowdhary is sixteen years old and living with her family in Ahmedabad, one of India’s fastest-growing cities, when a gruesome train fire claims the lives of sixty Hindu right-wing volunteers and upends the life of five million Muslims. Instead of taking her school exams that week, Zara is put under a three-month siege, with her family and thousands of others fearing for their lives as Hindu neighbors, friends, and members of civil society transform overnight into bloodthirsty mobs, hunting and massacring their fellow citizens. The chief minister of the state at the time, Narendra Modi, will later be accused of fomenting the massacre, and yet a decade later, will rise to become India’s prime minister, sending the “world’s largest democracy” hurtling toward cacophonous Hindu nationalism. The Lucky Ones traces the past of a multigenerational Muslim family to India’s brave but bloody origins, a segregated city’s ancient past, and the lingering hurt causing bloodshed on the streets. Symphonic interludes offer glimpses into the precious, ordinary lives of Muslims, all locked together in a crumbling apartment building in the city’s old quarters, with their ability to forgive and find laughter, to offer grace even as the world outside, and their place in it, falls apart. The Lucky Ones entwines lost histories across a subcontinent, examines forgotten myths, prods a family’s secrets, and gazes unflinchingly back at a country rushing to move past the biggest pogrom in its modern history. It is a warning thrown to the world by a young survivor, to democracies that fail to protect their vulnerable, and to homes that won’t listen to their daughters. It is an ode to the rebellion of a young woman who insists she will belong to her land, family, and faith on her own terms.
