Gallery Talk | 2 Exhibition Tours on Anticipating the Modern (online)

Curator Emelie Gevalt walks you through two current exhibitions: Anything But Simple: Gift Drawings and the Shaker Aesthetic and Playing with Design: Gameboards, Art and Culture, which both shed light on American early modernist aesthetics.  At the intersection of arts, design, and religion, Anything But Simple: Gift Drawings and the Shaker Aesthetic complicates understandings of Shakers’ minimalism with a series of vibrant, divinely-inspired drawings made by women in the mid-19th century. Similarly placed at a crossroads between arts, design, and popular culture, Playing with Design: Gameboards, Art and Culture reflects the emergence of a colorful abstract language through a rich selection of locally-made game boards, many created at the turn of the 20th century.  This curatorial walkthrough will present the various artifacts on view in the galleries – including intricate drawings, handcrafted gameboards, furniture, utilitarian objects and archival materials – while exploring larger cultural themes including the emergence of modernism, the blurred boundaries between handicraft and arts, and the role of community in the development of American material culture in the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Opening Reception | David WIseman: Works from the Lost Valley

In his latest body of work, David Wiseman has shifted his focus from architectural immersion—sprawling installations of walls, ceilings, and entire rooms—to the more intimate scale of chairs, tables, mirrors, and other functional forms. Moving from large-scale installations to discrete objects may at first seem like a contraction in scope, but instead the shift feels more like to an expansion of vision and confidence. The wonder-evoking magic of Wiseman’s bespoke environmental interventions is now distilled into individual objects of extraordinary power, poignancy, and beauty. Like an ironic spin on the Modernist axiom that less is more, his chairs and mirrors offer immersive experiences every bit as rich and layered as those of his meticulously wrought spatial explorations. Alive with curiosity, affection, and astonishing technical mastery, the new pieces dance joyously at the intersection of humanity, artistry, and glorious nature.

Book Discussion | Monuments Decolonized: Algeria’s French Colonial Heritage

"Statuomania" overtook Algeria beginning in the nineteenth century as the French affinity for monuments placed thousands of war memorials across the French colony. But following Algeria's hard-fought independence in 1962, these monuments took on different meaning and some were "repatriated" to France, legally or clandestinely. Today, in both Algeria and France, people are moving and removing, vandalizing and preserving this contested, yet shared monumental heritage. Author Susan Slyomovics follows the afterlives of French-built war memorials in Algeria and those taken to France in her new book. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and interviews in both countries, she analyzes the colonial nostalgia, dissonant heritage, and ongoing decolonization and iconoclasm of these works of art. Her book offers a fresh aesthetic take on the increasingly global move to fell monuments that celebrate settler colonial histories.

Film | The Pinochet Case (2001): The Tragedy of Chile

In September 1998, Pinochet flew to London on a pleasure trip but experienced back pain and underwent an operation in the London Clinic. Upon waking, he was arrested by Scotland Yard. Could it be that this was to become the first Latin American dictator to answer for crimes while serving as Head of State? After 500 days of house arrest, he nevertheless eventually returned unscathed to Chile, despite the compelling case built against him before and during this period by a young Spanish prosecutor, Carlos Castresana. Concert | Electroacoustic Music with Sounds of Nature

Everywhere We Are is the Farthest Place, an iterative soundscape composition, combines an electroacoustic performance with field recordings of glacial geologic activity and oceanographic data Mary Edwards gathered while on an art and science sailing expedition on a research vessel above the 78th parallel in Svalbard. This ode rather than an elegy to the transforming Arctic based on eyewitness accounts of natural events—iceberg torrents, calving glaciers, whale song and converging subterranean rivers—is sonically recreated as a score with intention of “decentralizing the centered and un-othering the others.”

Discussion | Energy in Art

Charting the intersections of energy and artistic practice, this event will begin with an introduction by director Stefanie Hessler on the varied thematic concerns of the Energies exhibition. This will be followed with a lecture by art historian Caroline A. Jones that provides a comparative analysis on energy and entropy between Robert Smithson’s site-specific projects and the self-organizing community efforts in the East Village in the 1970s. The evening will conclude with a sonic performance, “Synergies,” by sound artist and improviser Jad Atoui, who explores the fluidity of memory and connections between energy and the natural world through modified hard disks, water, wind and acoustic resonance.

Lecture | Leeches! Arsenic! Water Therapy! Blistering! Unusual Medical Cures from the 19th Century (online)

Before Pasteur and the advent of germ theory in 1859, medicine was nothing short of the wild wild west. And with antibiotics almost a century away, doctors could only treat the symptoms of the sickness, not the sickness itself. The cures were often strange, indeed -- and could be worse than the illness. Matilda Garrido and Ashley Semrick in a lively discussion of medical cures used in the 19th century, such as leeches, hydropathy (water therapy), patent medicines (which frequently made patients sicker), and more. Matilda will also present the concept of the "wandering uterus," believed for centuries to be the cause of all female illness.

Discussion | Politics in the Village: Black Women Entertainers and the Civil Rights Movement

This lecture will be given by Ruth Feldstein, Professor of History and American Studies at Rutgers University and award-winning author of How It Feels To Be Free, which provided the basis for a 2020 PBS documentary produced by Alicia Keys that examined Black women performers who played critical roles in political and social activism. As she looked back on the years when her career was first taking off, Nina Simone would recall that at the Village Gate in the late 1950s, “politics was so mixed in with what went on… that I remember it now as two sides of the same coin, politics and jazz.” Simone was one of many entertainers who felt that the Village offered something special: a path into interracial communities in which civil rights activism and creativity not only intermingled but reinforced each other and flourished. Professor Feldstein’s talk will consider the critical role that Black women performers played in these communities of activist-entertainers. Simone, Abbey Lincoln, Miriam Makeba, Diahann Carroll, Maya Angelou, Cicely Tyson, Lorraine Hansberry, Odetta were just some of the Black women who made the most of this unique time and place, as they simultaneously forged careers and supported Black freedom. They did so in cultural and political spaces largely dominated by men, where they seized opportunities but also faced constraints, and where they made choices about how to perform Black womanhood. This loosely connected cohort of Black women did not necessarily call themselves feminists. Still, they insisted that the liberation they desired could not separate race from sex. Years before “intersectionality” became the buzzword that it is in social justice circles today, Black women entertainers lived and performed a politics of intersectionality – at Village hot spots and subsequently, around the world. More than talented performers, they were activists and role models, central to what were arguably the two most transformative social movements of the twentieth century: civil rights and women’s liberation. Professor Feldstein will discuss the ways in which Harlem and Greenwich Village provided artistic and political possibilities for so many women whose names are now writ large in the history of our times.

Book Discussion | Get the Picture: A Mind-Bending Journey Among the Inspired Artists and Obsessive Art Fiends Who Taught Me How to See by Bianca Bosker

An award-winning journalist obsessed with obsession, Bianca Bosker’s existence was upended when she wandered into the art world—and couldn’t look away. Intrigued by artists who hyperventilate around their favorite colors and art fiends who max out credit cards to show hunks of metal they think can change the world, Bosker grew fixated on understanding why art matters and how she—or any of us—could engage with it more deeply. In Get the Picture, Bosker throws herself into the nerve center of art and the people who live for it: gallerists, collectors, curators, and, of course, artists themselves—the kind who work multiple jobs to afford their studios while scrabbling to get eyes on their art. As she stretches canvases until her fingers blister, talks her way into A-list parties full of billionaire collectors, has her face sat on by a nearly-naked performance artist, and forces herself to stare at a single sculpture for hours on end while working as a museum security guard, she discovers not only the inner workings of the art-canonization machine but also a more expansive way of living.

Book Discussion | Taming Silicon Valley by Gary Marcus (In Person AND Online!)

In his new book, Taming Silicon Valley, Gary Marcus warns readers that current AI is both morally and technically inadequate—and Big Tech has effectively captured policymakers, playing both the public and the government. AI technology is too important to cede to corporate control, and the decisions we make now will shape our next century. Marcus lays bare two possible futures: AI revolutionizes science, medicine, and technology and delivers us a world of abundance and better health; or, if corporate powers are left unchecked, we could head toward disasters like the downfall of democracy, or even extinction. Marcus discusses with journalist Julia Angwin what we need to do as a society, and as individual citizens, to safeguard our democracy and our future to create a thriving, AI-positive world.

Performance | Constitution Day 2024: Verbatim Firsthand Accounts of Living in America

"That's Not a Partisan Feeling, That's Patriotic: A Portraits US Election 2024 Event" is a new Verbatim Performance Lab (VPL) project aimed at gathering people's thoughts and feelings about the U.S. Presidency during the 2024 election cycle. The project takes a unique approach by utilizing interviews with individuals living and/or working in the United States as the primary source material for its performances. By gathering firsthand accounts and perspectives from a diverse range of voices, VPL creates a rich tapestry of narratives that reflect the lived experiences and collective consciousness surrounding the U.S. Presidency. This is a verbatim performance portraying these stories word for word, offering the audience a compelling glimpse into the complexities of how people perceive the role of the presidency across the United States.
