Lecture | Progress Stalled? The Uncertain Future of Mortality and Healthy Aging in the US and UK (in-person and online)

Steady and significant improvements in life expectancy have been a bright spot for human progress for the last century or more. Recently, this success has shown signs of faltering in some high-income countries such as the US and UK, where mortality improvements have slowed or even reversed since the early 2010s. Combined with the large mortality shock of the COVID-19 pandemic, guaranteed forward progress feels less certain. This talk reviews recent trends and discuss prospects for the future of mortality in high-income countries, including lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, challenges and opportunities related to the obesity epidemic, and emerging reasons for both optimism and pessimism.   Speaker: Jennifer Beam Dowd, Professor of Demography and Population Health Deputy Director, Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science,  University of Oxford

Book Discussion | Disinformation, Misinformation, and Democracy: Legal Approaches in Comparative Context (in-person and online)

In today's digital age, the spread of dis- and misinformation across traditional and social media poses a significant threat to democracy. Yet repressing political speech in the name of truth can also undermine democratic values. This volume brings together prominent legal scholars from democracies worldwide to explore and evaluate different regulatory approaches for addressing this complex problem – all taking into account that the cure must not be worse than the disease. Using a comparative lens, the book offers important and novel insights into methods ranging from national regulation of politicians' speech to empowering civil-society groups that are well-positioned to blunt the effects of disinformation and misinformation. The book also provides solutions-oriented recommendations for policymakers, judges, legal practitioners, and scholars seeking to promote democratic values by encouraging free political speech while combatting disinformation and misinformation.

Lecture | Responsible AI: Ethics and Regulation in the New Era (in-person and online)

The AI revolution created a disruptive change in the way we consume technology and is currently part into almost every work environment and service. Robots of various types are an integral part of industry, medicine and social applications - this is no longer science fiction. Ethics, on the other hand, is an abstract concept and its content depends on time and geography. (The first attempt to connect artificial intelligence and ethics was made by the writer Isaac Asimov in 1950, in which rules were established regarding the harm of robots to humans, their obedience to human commands and the protection of robots for their existence.) In recent years with the implementation of Gen AI, ChatGPT, CoPilot, and similar implementations, it seems that the sky is the limit and the amount of "intimidating rumors and prophecies" intensifies the concern and the need for regulation, legislation and clear boundaries. In the lecture, we will raise essential questions both about the technology, about the need, and the meanings of creating a set of values. Who is the responsible bod? Are there already efforts in the world? Is it possible to control the AI technology, and perhaps there is no real need as it has not been done so far in the Internet technology? Those and more issues that concern our professional life will be discussed. Speaker: Nava Shaked, Holon Institute of Technology

Book Discussion | From Pushkin to Popular Culture: Essays on Russia

This volume includes many of the best essays by Catharine Theimer Nepomnyashchy (1951-2015), one of the most original scholars of Russian culture of her generation. Nepomnyashchy's broad interests ranged from Pushkin to contemporary Russian popular culture. Her work speaks to issues that remain central to Slavic studies today, including imperialist impulses and rhetoric in Russian culture; the resiliency and post-Soviet afterlife of Stalinist mythic and cultic formulas; and problems connected with dissent, censorship, and displacement. In addition to some of Nepomnyashchy's best previously published scholarly work, this volume includes excerpts from The Politics of Tradition: Rerooting Russian Literature After Stalin, the book manuscript that Nepomnyashchy was working on in the last years of her life.

Opening Reception | Beyond Patchwork: The Abstractions of Yvonne Wells

Born in 1939 in Tuscaloosa, Yvonne Wells is a self-taught textile artist living and working in the same region that was home to the enslaved female quilters of the rural community known as Gee’s Bend. While versed in the heritage techniques associated with them, Wells possesses a deeply maverick attitude that has freed her to break the rules of traditional quilt- making and forge a decidedly individualistic artistic path with her own invented visual vernacular. Wells has attracted acclaim over past decades for works that assert a bold narrative figuration, taking on cultural and sociopolitical topics that range from portraits of Pop icons to the ongoing struggle for rights and equality. Against that backdrop, the exhibition will be the very first to elucidate a different aspect of Wells’ practice— her unique relationship to abstraction as an intuitive and improvisational method of construction and a liberating form of self-expression.

Opening Reception | Gala Porras-Kim: The motion of an alluvial record

The motion of an alluvial record is an atmospheric installation by artist Gala Porras-Kim that explores the complex relationships between cultural institutions, the objects they preserve, and the environments from which these objects originate. Central to this exhibition is a mud work composed of clay sourced from the wetlands of the Yucatán Peninsula. This material, layered with centuries of sediment, serves as a living archive—a tangible record of both geological and human histories. When submerged in water, the clay's particles, each from a range of eras, defy linear chronology and form a tableau that captures a holistic and cyclical view of time, thus echoing the Maya understanding of the fluidity of time.

Opening Reception | Jon Serl: No straight lines

An exhibition exploring the art and legacy of self-taught American painter Jon Serl (Joseph Searles, 1894–1993), which will take place at the gallery’s East 69th Street location. The son of a vaudeville family, Serl acted in traveling shows as a child, took on other unconventional roles, and came to painting seriously only later, in the 1940s. Drawing from his own freewheeling life and myriad experiences, Serl adopted a pictorial idiom and highly expressionistic style that embrace the spectrum between reality and fantasy; his figurative paintings depict still lifes, landscapes, and a range of everyday subject matter—an artist in the studio, a procession of chapel attendees, a couple waltzing—in bold colors and formations that appear as if presented on stage.

Historian Federico Finchelstein offers a precise explanation of why Trumpism and similar movements across the world belong to a new political breed, the last outcome of the combined histories of fascism and populism: the wannabe fascists. This new type of populist politician is typically an legally elected leader who, unlike previous populists who were eager to distance themselves from fascism, turns to totalitarian lies, racism, and illegal means to destroy democracy from within.

Forum | Contesting Futures: Beyond the UN Summit

The United Nations has organized the Summit of the Future for September 2024, prompted by the difficulties in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and new global problems facing regions and peoples. The summit documents focus on a single future assuming that international commitments and goals will be finally achieved. This future is the product of meetings after meetings for the past decades. It is presented as a one-in-a-generation opportunity to get on track and leave no one behind globally.  Is this approach ambitious enough? Does it, can it, represent the aspirations of so many different peoples around the world? Is this enough to help different nations, communities, and cultures to identify their paths to empower their own expectations, desires, and capacities? If not, isn’t it time to change the way futures (in plural) are imagined and constructed?  In this context, this panel will provide an opportunity to address and contest these questions from diverse national and disciplinary perspectives, and thereby make room for different approaches to imagining multiple and empowering futures.

Discussion | Writing While the World is Happening

A reading and conversation with the author Lena Gorelik, and the literary scholars Saskia Fischer (Leibniz University Hannover), and Ela Gezen (University of Massachusetts Amherst). Whether as a journalist, essayist, or author of novels, plays, and short stories, questions of belonging, migration, and the German memory culture, as well as the relationship between literature and sociopolitical engagement in general, play a central role in Lena Gorelik’s writing. In her texts, she not only draws attention to a pluralistic, post-migrant reality, but also presents it in all its ambivalence in an aesthetically complex manner. Her writing reflects on the possibilities of literature, but also on the voices and stories that receive little or no attention in the German public sphere.

Book Discussion | Health and Safety: A Breakdown

Emily Witt presents a memoir about drugs, techno, and New York City. In the summer of 2016, a divisive presidential election was underway, and a new breed of right-wing rage was on the rise. Emily Witt, who would soon publish her first book on sex in the digital age, had recently quit antidepressants for a more expansive world of psychedelic experimentation. From her apartment in Brooklyn, she began to catch glimpses of the clandestine nightlife scene thrumming around her. Witt charts her immersion into New York City’s dance music underground. Emily would come to lead a double life. By day she worked as a journalist, covering gun violence, climate catastrophes, and the rallies of right-wing militias. And by night she pushed the limits of consciousness in hollowed-out office spaces and warehouses to music that sounded like the future. But no counterculture, no matter how utopian, could stave off the squalor of American politics and the cataclysm of 2020. Affectionate yet never sentimental, Health and Safety is a lament for a broken relationship, for a changed nightlife scene, and for New York City just before the fall. Sparing no one—least of all herself—Witt offers her life as a lens onto an era of American delirium and dissolution.

Book Discussion | States of Emergency: Love in the Time of Climate Change

In the summer of 2015, a young couple--an American and his French wife--undergo fertility treatment in Paris. They settle in to wait for the results as a heatwave paralyzes the city. As the heat rises, a state of emergency is declared and tempers flare, leaving cracks in the foundation of their marriage. In the months that follow, they find themselves navigating a confluence of world crises and historical forces that affect each in ways the other struggles to understand. Against this backdrop of existential dread, the fissures in their marriage widen as they confront their everyday apocalypse. An ongoing conversation begins: one that moves backward and forward in time, swings between hope and despair, dry laughter and hard fury, all in an effort toward reconciliation. How will their conflicting ideas about how to build a life together--how to love each other--survive in the face of a future that's collapsing before their eyes? With author Chris Knapp.

Discussion | Yiddish on the Move: Yiddish Writing and Publishing after the Holocaust (in-person and online)

The destruction of Eastern European Yiddish-speaking Jewry and its established cultural centers during the Holocaust necessitated a complex reevaluation of the relationship between the perceived former periphery of Yiddish literary capitals, which included Lodz, Warsaw, and Vilnius, and the new, emerging Yiddish centers of Buenos Aires and Montreal. A particularly intriguing case is the literary production on the Soviet territory behind the Iron Curtain. These structural dynamics intricately link the multifaceted roles of writers, editors, translators, and, ultimately, publishers. This is a panel discussion featuring Rachelle Grossman, Matt Johnson, Harriet Murav, and Christin Zuhlke, moderated by Erin McGlothlin, as they delve into the elaborate dynamics of Yiddish writing and publishing across transnational literary networks after the Holocaust. They will also discuss the intertwined topics of audience, translations, self-translations, and the profound impact of Holocaust memory and testimony.
