Discussion | Combating Myths and Misinformation about Renewable Energy

The success of the energy transition will depend on the rapid deployment of zero emission technologies, such as wind, solar, and electric vehicles. It will also require good faith engagement with local communities affected by the transition, including historically marginalized communities. However, misinformation and coordinated disinformation are pervasive. Earlier this year, the Sabin Center published a report called Rebutting 33 False Claims About Solar, Wind, and Electric Vehicles that examines and dispels common myths and misconceptions. This is a panel discussion followed by lunch and networking. In the panel discussion, a diverse group of experts from academia, private practice, the press and advocacy organizations will discuss some of the myths and misconceptions addressed in the Sabin Center's report—and how to overcome them. Participants will include: Basil Seggos, Foley Hoag Peter Lehner, Earthjustice Timmons Roberts, Brown University Peggy Shepard, WE ACT Jael Holzman, Heatmap Matthew Eisenson, Sabin Center (moderator)

Book Discussion | Schindler’s Listed: The Search for My Father’s Lost Gold (online)

Schindler’s Listed tells the story of Mark Biederman’s twenty-year quest to find gold coins which his father’s family buried in their backyard in Poland just prior to being deported by the Nazis to concentration camps. His father survived the war, but died when Mark was a teenager, leaving him only with the knowledge that he had buried the coins somewhere in Poland, and no information about his family. During his research, Biederman uncovered many interesting and disturbing facts about his parents and their families, such as the fact that his father was the third person on Oskar Schindler’s list and had a chance meeting with Adolf Hitler, and that his mother was selected as a cook for the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele. Randi Biederman, co-author of the book, will discuss the journey to discover the family’s history during the Holocaust and their subsequent success in rebuilding their lives in the United States.

Opera | Darius Milhaud's Opera Esther de Carpentras: Excerpts and Discussion

Esther de Carpentras is an opera-bouffe in two acts composed by Darius Milhaud and based on a text by Armand Lunel. It premiered in 1938 at the Paris Opera Comique, just two years prior to Milhaud's escape to the United States. Both the music and libretto reference the literary and theatrical interpretations of the biblical Esther story and integrate the Jewish heritage of Milhaud and Lunel with that of the papal domains of Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin (13th to 18th centuries) in southern France. Traditional readings of the Esther stories and the accompanying theatrical performances took place during the festival of Purim in the carri?res (Jewish ghettos) of the cities of Avignon, Cavaillon, Carpentras, and L'isle-sur-Sorgue. In the synagogues, the biblical text was read in Hebrew, understood exclusively by the community's men, while the literary, musical, and theatrical performances were staged in colloquial Jud?o-Proven?al, thus accessible also to the community's women and children. Similar musical and theatrical performances existed in other Jewish (Ashkenazi and Sephardic) and Christian communities of Europe, a heritage that shaped both the composer's and librettist's vision. This performance will feature excerpts from the opera, a video animation interpreting the work, as well as short lectures.
