Discussion | Timber Matters: Regional Approaches to Sustainable Mass Timber Ecosystems

Mass timber leaders from across the U.S. highlight programs, policies, people, and practices that are advancing mass timber.   As society seeks climate solutions that decarbonize cities and leverage the carbon benefits of forests and trees, mass timber – a family of massive engineered wood building construction materials used in primarily in large buildings – is frequently cited as a powerful tool to achieve multiple benefits. Nationwide, more mass timber apartment buildings, community centers, schools, and offices are opening their doors, and domestic mass timber supply is gradually increasing as well. As mass timber momentum builds, leaders across the U.S. are working to facilitate mass timber ecosystems that maximize mass timber’s forest, carbon, and climate benefits in ways that reflect the specific needs and contexts of the communities and environments in those regions. In her 2023 book, Designing Forests and Other Mass Timber Futures, NYC architect and educator Lindsey Wikstrom investigated mass timber supply chains to understand how growing mass timber’s presence in the built environment can best respect, protect, and benefit communities, cultures, economies, and the built environment. Wikstrom moderates a panel of mass timber leaders from across the U.S. who will highlight programs, policies, people, and practices that are advancing mass timber ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, Michigan/the Great Lakes Region, George, New England, and New York City.

Book Discussion | The Doctrine of the Separate Spheres in Political Economy and Economics: Gender Equality and Classical Liberalism

Giandomenica Becchio, Professor of Economics at Turin University will present her new book. From the author: "This book delves into the doctrine of separate spheres within the history of economic thought. The concept of separate spheres emerged in philosophy and has consistently been incorporated by various disciplines. This book stands as the first comprehensive exploration of how this doctrine was embraced, adapted, and contested by economists engaged in gender issues and marriage theory. Spanning the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century, it illuminates the evolution of the drive for gender equality—rooted primarily in the tradition of classical liberalism—across the landscape of economic ideas and theories. This book is a valuable resource for scholars and researchers interested in the intricate history of the interconnections among between economic thought, feminism, gender studies, and cultural studies."

Book Discussion | Infrastructure Policy and Inequality: Lessons from 55 Countries

Michael Cohen's book reframes the purpose of infrastructure from being an input to economic growth to becoming a major instrument in reducing socio-economic inequalities in both industrialized and developing countries. The book surveys infrastructure policies and performance over several decades, drawing on global and national lessons of COVID-19 and extensive working experience in 55 countries. “It reviews the World Bank’s experience launching a 30-year program to alleviate urban poverty through 7,000 projects. It shows that many significant policy changes have improved global urban policies adopted by national and local governments, yet they have failed to significantly address and reduce intra-urban inequalities.”

Master Class | The Composer Gabriel Faure's Centenary

2024 marks the hundredth anniversary of the death of Gabriel Faure (1845-1924). This French composer was one of the most important European musical figures of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Author of an immense body of works for piano and symphony, he was also a genius of French melody and choral singing. His Requiem is still renown across the world. Yet, to a certain extent, Faure remains a discreet and marginal figure who deserves more sustained attention.  This masterclass by singer François Le Roux hopes to shine a light on this extraordinary artist through a series of events and performances that will bring joy to longtime Faure fans and introduce his work to new audiences.

Discussion | Tenement Tour & Concert: High Holidays in the Tenements (online)

They'll share primary sources, like high holiday tickets found underneath our tenement's floorboards, advertisements for a cantor with "a voice 500 times sweeter than Caruso," and holiday prayer books geared to English-speaking children. Concert | Jewish Musicians in 18C London: themes of exile, diaspora, belonging, and music as a site of self-expression

Eighteenth-century London was an especially cosmopolitan city and a relatively tolerant one, which led Jewish musicians from across Europe--from Sephardic, Ashkenazic, Italian, and Eastern descent--to move there. The Jewish community adopted musical customs of the greater London scene while maintaining their own musical traditions. By the second half of the century, Jewish musicians were performing in opera houses, public concerts, and at the English royal court alongside the leading Christian musicians of their day. While some managers and institutions were accommodating, Jewish musicians sometimes experienced clear anti-Jewish sentiment. By exploring the careers of Jewish figures such as the cellists Jacob and James Cervetto and the singer-composer Harriett Abrams, this concert by the Raritan Players sheds new light on the themes of exile, diaspora, belonging, and music as a site of self-expression among Jews in 18th-century London.
