Discussion | Methane Mission: Innovating Waste Management for the Plastic Crisis

An opportunity to rethink waste management--not just as a necessity, but as a powerful tool for reducing emissions, enhancing public health, and driving economic growth in emerging economies. This event will explore how strategic investments in waste management can tackle the global plastic crisis, enhance community health, and create economic stability. With waste being the third largest source of methane emissions and methane being a greenhouse gas 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, there is the potential for devastating consequences if meaningful intervention is not taken. Key actions such as organic waste separation, landfill gas capture, and reducing food waste have the potential to cut methane emissions by up to 36 million metric tons annually.

Lecture | Conservative Values and Authoritarian Regime Stability

In Summer 2023, The Economist explored the rise of authoritarian state projects to build conservative core constituencies based on state values. In Russia, the Kremlin’s efforts to instill state values in the population began in response to social protest in 2011-2012 and continued throughout the next decade. Relying on unique survey data collected in the months prior to Russia’s war in Ukraine, this talk will address the debates over the Russian values project, the types of conservatism expressed by citizens, the congruence between values and state messaging, the ideological structure of Russian society, and finally, the causal links between values and political participation. The analysis underscores the importance of a plurality of core voters in authoritarian regimes to limit dissent and project regime support in the face of societal fragmentation. Speaker: Regina Smyth.

Book Discussion | A Jew in the Street: New Perspectives on European Jewish History (online)

This book brings together original scholarship by 17 historians, drawing on the pioneering research of their teacher and colleague, Michael Stanislawski. These essays explore a mosaic of topics in the history of modern European Jewry from early modern times to the present, including the role of Jewish participants in the European revolutions of 1848, the dynamics of Zionist and non-Zionist views in the early 20th century, the origins of a magical charm against the evil eye, and more. Collectively, these works reject ideological and doctrinal clichés, demythologize the European Jewish past, and demonstrate that early modern and modern Jews responded creatively to modern forms of culture, religion, and the state from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Contributors to this volume pose new questions about the relationship between the particular and universal, antisemitism and modernization, religious and secular life, and the bonds and competition between cultures and languages, especially Yiddish, Hebrew, and modern European languages. These investigations illuminate the entangled experiences of Jews who sought to balance the pull of communal, religious, and linguistic traditions with the demands and allure of full participation in European life. This is a panel discussion about this new volume with editors Nancy Sinkoff, Jonathan Karp, James Loeffler, and Howard Lupovitch.

Book Discussion | "I Never Did Like Politics": How Fiorello La Guardia Became America's Mayor and Why He Still Matters (online)

Fiorello LaGuardia, born in the South Village in 1882, was one of the twentieth century's most colorful politicians--on the New York and national stage. He was also quintessentially American: the son of Italian immigrants, who rose in society through sheer will and chutzpah. Almost one hundred years later, America is once again grappling with issues that would have been familiar to the Little Flower, as he was affectionately known. It's time to bring back LaGuardia, argues historian and journalist Terry Golway, to remind us all what an effective municipal officer (as he preferred to call himself) can achieve... Golway examines LaGuardia's extraordinary career through four essential qualities: As a patriot, a dissenter, a leader, and a statesman. He needed them all when he stood against the nativism, religious and racial bigotry, and reactionary economic policies of the 1920s, and again when he faced the realities of Depression-era New York and the rise of fascism at home and abroad in the 1930s. Just before World War II, the Roosevelt administration formally apologized to the Nazis when LaGuardia referred to Hitler as a "brown-shirted fanatic." There was nobody quite like Fiorello LaGuardia. In this immensely readable book, as entertaining as the man himself, Terry Golway captures the enduring appeal of one of America's greatest leaders.

Opening Reception | Michael Dweck: Blunderbust

Michael Dweck’s childhood fascination with the stock car races he grew up with is reflected in this breakthrough exhibition of photographs and paintings. Raceways were a vital part of the town culture when Dweck was growing up near Long Island. In 2007, he returned to the last remaining course track at Riverhead with its “Blunderbust” races. The racetrack served not only as his subject and studio for over ten years but also as a metaphor for a global cultural phenomenon: the erosion of concrete identity, the collapse of community institutions, and the decay of handmade objects. This work culminated in the photographs and paintings included in this exhibition and his 2018 directorial debut film The Last Race, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival that year.

Film | Stop-Motion: A Multimedia Tragicomedy

Tragedy can tear families apart – or it can bring them together… really together. Stop-Motion occupies that in-between space - the space between tragedy and comedy, family drama and magical escape. Xan, who spent her 20s acting as her mother’s sole caretaker, must navigate the aftermath of a terrible accident (as well as some long-neglected family relationships). Privately, she reveals herself to us through a whimsical stop-motion film she’s been working on while contending with grief, duty, and the limits of escapism. Stop-Motion probes the idea of how an individual - and a family - can evolve in the face of tragedy and perhaps, move forward together - even if it’s one frame at a time. Director: Liz Kerin

Director: John Huston Cast: Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, Grayson Hall, Cyril Delevanti, Sue Lyon Richard Burton established himself as a formidable Shakespearean actor in the 1950s, and gave a memorable performance as Hamlet in 1964. Ava Gardner was an American actress. She first signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1941 and appeared mainly in small roles until she drew critics' attention in 1946 with her performance in Robert Siodmak's film noir The Killers. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in John Ford's Mogambo (1953), and for best actress for both a Golden Globe Award and BAFTA Award for her performance in John Huston's The Night of the Iguana (1964). She earned a BA from Kansas State University and an MFA from Wichita State University. Her works include The Romance of Happy Workers (2006), My Common Heart(2011), Garments Against Women (2015, 2016), which Maureen McLane described as “a sad, beautiful, passionate book that registers the political economy of literature and of life itself,” and Handbook of Disappointed Fate (2018). She was also awarded the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize in early 2020 and the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for her book The Undying: Pain, Vulnerability, Mortality, Medicine, Art, Time, Dreams, Data, Exhaustion, Cancer, and Care. Boyer lives in Kansas City, Missouri, where since 2011 she has been a professor at the Kansas City Art Institute.
