Book Discussion | 2 Books on Literature and Climate Change

Karen Pinkus and Phillip John Usher will discuss their recent book publications --Pinkus's Subsurface and Usher's Exterranean -- that ask how literature can examine our relationship to the underground and the subsurface in our current moment of climate change. Subsurface is s bold new consideration of climate change between narratives of the Earth’s layers and policy of the present. Long seen as a realm of mystery and possibility, the subsurface beneath our feet has taken on all-too-real import in the era of climate change. Can reading narratives of the past that take imaginative leaps under the surface better attune us to our present knowledge of a warming planet? Exterranean concerns the extraction of stuff from the Earth, a process in which matter goes from being sub- to exterranean. By opening up a rich archive of nonmodern texts and images from across Europe, this work offers a bracing riposte to several critical trends in ecological thought.

Classical Music | The Composer Gabriel Faure's Centenary

2024 marks the hundredth anniversary of the death of Gabriel Faure (1845-1924). This French composer was one of the most important European musical figures of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Author of an immense body of works for piano and symphony, he was also a genius of French melody and choral singing. His Requiem is still renown across the world. Yet, to a certain extent, Faure remains a discreet and marginal figure who deserves more sustained attention.  This concert with pianists Eteri Andjaparidze, Nicolas Salloum, and Alex Tuchman hopes to shine a light on this extraordinary artist through a series of events and performances that will bring joy to longtime Faure fans and introduce his work to new audiences.
