NYTC was formed when saxophonist Dave Pietro and pianist Jonathan Katz decided to rekindle their musical relationship after first playing together at summer band camp in 1982.
As a member of the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra from 1994-2003, Dave made yearly trips to Japan and would often stay after the tours to play some gigs with Jonathan. In 2002 they decided to record a CD together with two of the top Japanese jazz musicians on the scene today and NYTC was born.
Dave Pietro, saxophonist, woodwind doubler, composer, has performed at jazz clubs, jazz festivals, schools and concert halls in more than 30 countries throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America.
Jonathan Katz studied French horn with Paul Ingraham at Yale University and jazz piano and composition with Bill Dobbins at the Eastman School of Music. After studying Japanese at Sophia University on a fellowship from Yale, he moved to Tokyo in 1991. Since then Jonathan has recorded three critically acclaimed CDs as a trio leader and worked as pianist in the bands of such diverse artists as Ray Brown, Lew Tabackin, Joe Lee Wilson and Eddie Henderson. He is also musical director/pianist/French hornist of the Tokyo-based jazz/world music group CANDELA which has toured North America twice, including a performance in 2004 at the Blue Note in New York. Jonathan has also made nationwide television appearances performing and recording with the Nagoya Philharmonic and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestras, hosted a Japanese language jazz radio show for Tokyo FM, taught at the Yamaha Music Academy and Shobi Conservatory.
