The New Amsterdam Musical Association began life in 1900 as a union for black musicians who were denied more admission into the whites-only local union. A dedicated core of Volunteer Members are now working to revitalize NAMA, the first official representative of black musicians in the world, where syncopation fused with ragtime to create swing dance music and set the stage for the music that came to be known as Jazz. less

Performance | Theater for the New City's Tally Ho!, or Navigating the Future, an Outdoors Performance


Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company is in its 33rd annual tour, this year more doing Tally Ho!, or Navigating the Future, a rip-roaring musical with book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field and musical score composed by David Tice. Productions take place at various outside venues across the city. TNC's award-winning Street Theater always contains an elaborate assemblage of trap doors, giant puppets, smoke machines, masks, original choreography and a huge (9' x 12') running screen providing continuous movement behind the actors. The company of 27 actors, twelve crew members, two assistant directors and five live musicians shares the challenge of performing outside and holding a large, non-captive audience. The music varies in style from Bossa Nova to Gilbert & Sullivan. The musical is a morality play about how America, facing financial failure, must set a course through the uncertainty of what's to come. less

Dance Performance | Afro-Latin Music and Dance: Oyu Oro Afro-Cuban Dance / Sidiki Conde & Tokounou / Caracumbe


These song-and-dance troupes hail from Cuba, Guinea, and Peru, bound by a deep rootedness in West African more traditions. Oyu Oro’s dancers step lively to the transplanted rhythms of the Yoruba people. Sidiki Conde faces down a disability at the helm of a fine Afro-pop band that is as high energy as it is inspirational. Caracumbe (pictured) brings intensity with a declaration that the time of recognition has come for Peru’s black population. less

Concert | Alt-rockers: Dinosaur Jr. / The Walkmen / Saviours


Dinosaur Jr. is an American alternative rock band from Amherst, Massachusetts. Their distinct sound is more characterized by high gain, extensive use of feedback and distortion. This summer, Dinosaur Jr. will be releasing a highly anticipated album composed of all new material. New York City-based indie-rockers The Walkmen formed in 2000 and released their debut album Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone in 2002 to a critically warm reception. The Walkmen’s 2008 release You & Me earned the band further accolades. California-based prog-rock/metal outfit Saviours released their sophomore album Into Abbadon in 2008. Influenced by the heavy sounds of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath that came out of Great Britain in the 70s. less

Concert | Los Soneros de Oriente, Cuban music


Taking their name from the region of Cuba that is most famous for Son Montuno, Los Soneros de Oriente more represent a lifelong commitment to traditional Cuban music. Composed primarily of former members of the great band, Son del la Loma, Los Soneros pay a tribute to that group and its founder, the late Armando Sanchez, who dedicated his life to the maintenance of Son. This is the music of the countryside and the mountains, based on the Clave and Tres, with the trumpets toasting the top. less

Africa Aye / Ibboru / Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca The transatlantic slave route brought sacred rhythms more that have infused popular music with multiple meanings. Africa Aye (pictured), composed of Kongo master traditional drummers, present vibrant root rhythms. In singer-percussionist Pedro Martinez’s Ibboru, experience the journey to the Kongo-rooted rhythms of rumba and Efik rhythms, still celebrated in the secret male society of the Abakuas. Singer-bandleader Ricardo Lemvo’s brilliant repertoire, which includes songs in English, French, Spanish, and Lingala, unites the rich dance rhythms of the Diaspora. less
