Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend more in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Start times: 10:30am, 12pm less

Discussion | Real Solutions or Expensive Distractions: Proving or Disproving Ocean-Based Carbon Dioxide Removal in the Next 5 Years

The IPCC has made clear that carbon dioxide removal is needed, alongside deep emissions cuts, to avoid more catastrophic climate change. The world needs very large amounts of CDR, and still does not have enough options to get it. There is growing interest in ocean-based CDR techniques, but key questions remain about how effective they are in drawing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and durably storing it, as well as their environmental effects and safety. This session will provide an overview of what we know, and don't yet know, about ocean-based CDR and what we need to do to get actionable information. We will discuss the need for in-ocean research, including controlled field trials, to test different ocean CDR techniques. The social, ethical, and governance considerations associated with in-ocean research will also be explored. less
