Lecture | The Camp as a Space of Political Membership

Drawing on an ethnography of informal refugee camps for Kosovo forced migrants in Italy, this talk argues more for a resident-centred understanding of camps and camp-like institutions in refugee studies. It invites to a closer examination of the everyday lives in/of camps and the embodied practices and claims of citizenship that inhabitants perform. It discuss the concept of campzenship as a tool for capturing both the spatiality of membership and the specificity of contemporary camps. Speaker Dr. Nando Sigona is a sociologist with over ten years research and teaching experience in migration, refugee and ethnic studies. He is a Birmingham Fellow and lecturer at the School of Social Policy, University of Birmingham. less

Lecture | Universalism and Racism

With Jean-Frédéric Schaub (Professor, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, France). more This presentation examines the contradictions that emerged between universalist ambitions and three historical processes: categorization, segregation, and extermination. In studying the societies of the late Middle Ages and the Early Modern era, the question arises of the incompatibility between, on the one hand, Saint Paul's message ("There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians [3-28]"), and rules of segregation founded upon an assertion of natural inferiority and the inability of people to change, on the other. less
