Classical Music | Bach at Noon


The organ works of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) offered in 30-minute meditations. Johann Sebastian Bach was more a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. "The term 'baroque' has been widely used since the 19th century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750... Many famous composers from the first part of the baroque period came from Italy and have a link with Venice, including Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, but moved to Venice where he was 'maestro di capella' at the San Marco basilica. Vivaldi was born in Venice and was one of the greatest baroque composers. It is thanks to these strong musical traditions of Venice that we have today's music. Without Venetian church music and Monteverdi's advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented. There would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it." The Venice Insider Bach at Noon concerts take place every Tuesdays through Fridays, from September 10, 2019 to May 20, 2020. less

Book Club | My Ántonia A Novel About Immigrants of America By Pulitzer Prize Winning Author


The reminiscences of a New York lawyer, Jim Burden, about his boyhood in Nebraska, particularly a young more Bohemian girl named Antonia Shimerda, are set against the backdrop of the American assimilation of immigrants. Willa Cather (1873-1947), the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of more than fifteen books, was one of the most distinguished American writers of the early twentieth century. She achieved recognition for her novels of frontier life on the Great Plains, including O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915), and My Ántonia (1918). In 1923 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922), a novel set during World War I. less

The talk explores the answer that nineteenth-century African American thinkers offered and the way their answer transforms how we should understand the philosophical tradition of republicanism. Discussion | The Russian Media: Thirty Years of Freedom of the Press


A screening of Yury Shchekochikhin: His Life in Words and Deeds (2017), followed by a panel discussion. more The 40-minute documentary examines the life and work of investigative journalist and Duma representative Yury Shchekochikhin. An outspoken champion of democracy, free expression, and the rule of law during perestroika and in post-Soviet Russia, Shchekochikhin was famous for his probing investigative reporting on corruption, the KGB, human rights’ violations, international organized crime, and the war in Chechnya. He died in 2003, under unclear circumstances, in the middle of a major investigation of corruption at the top levels of the Russian law enforcement and intelligence services. The panel will consider both Shchekochikhin’s legacy and the current state of the Russian media thirty years after the law on freedom of the press was passed in 1990.
