Book Discussion | Alexander at the End of the World: The Forgotten Final Years of Alexander the Great (in-person and online)

By 330 B.C.E., Alexander the Great had reached the pinnacle of success. Or so it seemed. He had defeated more the Persian ruler Darius III and seized the capital city of Persepolis. His exhausted and traumatized soldiers were ready to return home to Macedonia. Yet Alexander had other plans. He was determined to continue heading east to Afghanistan in search of his ultimate goal: to reach the end of the world. Alexander’s unrelenting desire to press on resulted in a perilous seven-year journey through the unknown eastern borderlands of the Persian empire that would test the great conqueror’s physical and mental limits. This incredible sweep of time, culminating with his death in 323 BC at the age of 32, would come to determine Alexander’s legacy and shape the empire he left behind. Renowned classicist and art history professor Rachel Kousser vividly brings to life Alexander’s labyrinthine, treacherous final years. Meticulously researched and grippingly written, Kousser’s narrative is an unforgettable tale of daring and adventure, an inspiring portrait of grit and ambition, and a powerful meditation on the ability to learn from failure. less

Concert | Dance, dance otherwise we are lost!: Songs Celebrating Dance

An extraordinary evening of song celebrating the many facets of dance with Austrian artists Klaudia Tandl more and Gisela Jobstl. 24 pieces by no fewer than 20 composers, divided into five thematic sections, form the program of this extraordinary evening of song. Spanning various eras, diverse perspectives, and a wide range of stylistic approaches, the concert explores every facet of dance, fully embracing the titular quote from Pina Bausch: "Dance, dance, otherwise we are lost!" The first section is devoted to the theme of Dance and Death, featuring works such as Schubert's Der Jungling und der Tod and Saint-Saens' Danse macabre. The second part turns to Dance and Love, diving deep into the realm of (musical) Romanticism with Hector Berlioz's Le Spectre de la rose. In the sections that follow, the pieces take a choreographic step into the intangible, leaving the earthly and tangible behind to explore the weightless Dance of the Stars. This journey culminates in a celebration aptly titled Dance and Joy of Life, where music from Benjamin Britten, Leonard Bernstein, and Cecile Chaminade brings the art of dance to life in its purest and most exhilarating form. Finally, in honor of the Johann Strauss Jubilee, the evening concludes with a selection of some of his finest works, showcasing beloved pieces from operettas such as Die Fledermaus and Die Tanzerin Fanny Elssler. less
