Concert | South American Sounds with Agua Clara and Raices Group

Wednesday, July 27, 2011, 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm

Free

Music lovers are invited to bring lunch, join friends and relax to enjoy a taste of New York’s eclectic “underground” music scene.

Agua Clara is an instrumental group that specializes in music from the Andes Mountain region of South America. With most of its members from Peru, Ecuador, and Chile, this New York based quintet adopts a more progressive and lively approach to the Andean folk music, which results in a dancy, energetic and infectious energy. This unique sound of Agua Clara stems from its ability to give the traditional folk music a modern twist while still utilizing instruments indigenous to the Andean region, like pan flutes, quenas, and the charango. Led by Ecuadorian guitar player Angel Marin, Agua Clara has been creating and evolving for more than 15 years. During this time, it has made thousands of appearances all around The United States, and has recorded 9 CDs which, together, have left the unique sound of Agua Clara.

The name Raices means ‘Roots’ and the group was created by Patricio Paucar Andean flute player in 1992. Raices has pulled together musicians from South America, especially Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, who have the desire to play their traditional music, expressing their nostalgia and feelings of longing for their homelands. This music tradition reaches back before the time of the Incas and delivers a healing message of who we are as human beings and encouragement to listen to our Mother Earth. Intermixing native rhythms with later cultural influences, the music flourishes and indestructibly serves as a timekeeper at numerous festivals as well as Symphony Space, Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, Town Hall, and the National Museum of the American Indian. Patricio has been the acting grand master of the Inti Rami festivities in NY for the last few years. Their music calls on the ancestral spirit, honoring them and giving them voice. Back again this year by popular demand!
