Theater | The Imaginary Invalid: Moliere's Comedy-Ballet Starring Broadway Actor

Argan is ill. But is he? Argan is dying. But aren't we all? Argan wants absolute control. But is that ever achievable? After a series of upside down attempts to snap him out of it, a solution is found. But will it save him? The Imaginary Invalid is the last play that legendary French playwright Moliere wrote and was originally conceived as a Comedy-Ballet where theater, dance, and music are intertwined. It explores the fear of disease and the exploitation it breeds through infinitely humorous dialogue and in-your-face satire. This production will feature original choreography by FlexN dancer Cal Hunt, original music by cellist Johnathan Moore, and stars Tony and Olivier Award nominee Sahr Ngaujah. Director and Translator: Lucie Tiberghien Choreographer and Dancer: Cal Hunt Composer and Cellist: Johnathan Moore Cast: Dante Bonner, Mary Bacon, Rory Furey-King, Doron JePaul, Naomi Lorrain, Sahr Ngaujah, Shayvawn Webster

Book Club | Discussing the Poetry of National Book Award Winner Diane Seuss

In this Poetry Discussion meeting, the group will be reading Diane Seuss' 2024 poetry collection, Modern Poetry. This collection was: Finalist for the 2024 National Book Award for Poetry Winner of the 2024 Heartland Booksellers Award for Poetry A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of 2024 A New Yorker Essential Read of 2024 A Library Journal, Literary Hub, and Electric Literature Best Poetry Collection of 2024 Diane Seuss’s signature voice—audacious in its honesty, virtuosic in its artistry, outsider in its attitude—has become one of the most original in contemporary poetry. Her latest collection takes its title, Modern Poetry, from the first textbook Seuss encountered as a child and the first poetry course she took in college, as an enrapt but ill-equipped student, one who felt poetry was beyond her reach. Many of the poems make use of the forms and terms of musical and poetic craft—ballad, fugue, aria, refrain, coda—and contend with the works of writers overrepresented in textbooks and anthologies and those too often underrepresented.  Please bring your copy to the discussion; the group will be doing close readings and analysis of the poems. A PDF of the collection is available on the organizer's website.

Opening Reception | Afterlives of San Juan Hill: Lincoln Square/San Juan Hill Exhibition

In 1958, an emerging Puerto Rican community was displaced from the Lincoln Square and San Juan Hill neighborhoods to make way for the construction of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Utilizing never before seen archival documents, this exhibit delves into the larger Urban Renewal project and traces the process through which about 2,000 Puerto Ricans were displaced. These records invite the audience to reframe existing narratives of dispossession and development in New York City in the mid 20th century as well as highlight the individual stories of Lincoln Square residents during this pivotal time.

Play | Reimagining of Iconic Existentialist Play: Six Characters in Search of an Author

This original adaptation/reimagining of Luigi Pirandello’s play, Six Characters in Search of an Author, was first conceived by author and director Nick Gabriel at the height of the CoVID-19 pandemic and further developed in response to the #metoo movement. Gabriel has recreated a version of this metatheatrical, Existentialist classic that is faithful to Pirandello’s original vision, while contemporizing the circumstances to reflect the current cultural zeitgeist. In his version, the stage is populated with a group of actors and a director who are rehearsing a play called The Rules of the Game. As the rehearsal begins, six characters appear at the stage door. These new characters are not characters in The Rules of the Game. They're characters in a different, unnamed, unfinished dramatic narrative and they demand that their stories be heard. Original Playwright: Luigi Pirandello Adapted and Directed by Nick Gabriel Cast: Meridian Anastasia, Sophia Chacon, Feras Halabi, Finn Mackimmie, Isabella Kaplan, Michael Reese Shald, Sam Trott, Kevin Wang In English.
