Discussion | Hatch-Billops Archives: A Celebration of 30 Years of Documentation

Wednesday, February 9, 2011, 7:00 pm

$5

The Hatch-Billops Collection Inc. began in 1975 while Camille Billops, an artist and filmmaker, and James Hatch, a theater historian, were teaching art and literature at the City College of New York. They realized that very little had been published about Black American art, drama, literature and music and began collecting materials for their students. This has now grown into a major documentation and preservation archive consisting of: an oral history library of interviews with over 340 artists; the annual publication Artists and Influence based on these interviews ; a reference library; a biographical data archive; a slide and photographic collection, and special collections of African American art, theater scripts, poems, letters and periodicals. Reception follows.

Moderator: James V. Hatch. Panelists: Camille Billops, visual artist and filmmaker; Robin Holder, painter, printmaker and public artist; Dorothy Thigpen, Executive Director, 3rd World Newsreel.
