Discussion | Super-Powering Watchdog Journalism With Data — and Empathy

Tuesday, November 1, 2016, 12:30 pm

Free

Journalism has long been fueled by human intuition and empathy, but innovative technologies now give us a bird's-eye view of our world — and from that distance, sometimes we forget that the numbers describe humans. This wasn't lost when reporters used data to investigate the Catholic church's sex abuse scandal; it isn't lost when reporters create tools to keep powerful people in check; and it mustn't be lost as we mine social networks for data that we could once only dream of gathering.

Hear from a panel of three pioneering journalists who have unique experiences in this field:

Matt Carroll worked at the Boston Globe for 26 years. He was part of the investigations team that uncovered the Catholic church's sex abuse scandal, which was featured in the Academy Award winning movie, "Spotlight." He now helps graduate students create innovative tools for newsrooms at the MIT Media Lab.

Miguel Paz is an investigative reporter who created data journalism website Poderopedia, which keeps track of the powerful players in business and politics in Chile, Colombia and Venezuela. He is a lecturer at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.

Lam Thuy Vo is a data and graphics journalist who has held multiple positions with the Wall Street Journal, most recently with the investigative team. She was also the head Al Jazeera America's interactives team. She'll soon be off at a Buzzfeed fellowship, studying ethical ways to mine and use social data for storytelling.
