Performance | Theater for the New City's Tally Ho!, or Navigating the Future, an Outdoors Performance

Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company is in its 33rd annual tour, this year doing Tally Ho!, or Navigating the Future, a rip-roaring musical with book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field and musical score composed by David Tice. Productions take place at various outside venues across the city. TNC's award-winning Street Theater always contains an elaborate assemblage of trap doors, giant puppets, smoke machines, masks, original choreography and a huge (9' x 12') running screen providing continuous movement behind the actors. The company of 27 actors, twelve crew members, two assistant directors and five live musicians shares the challenge of performing outside and holding a large, non-captive audience. The music varies in style from Bossa Nova to Gilbert & Sullivan. The musical is a morality play about how America, facing financial failure, must set a course through the uncertainty of what's to come.

Concert | The Flanks/Hawke & Owl, underground country

The Flanks (pictured), pioneers of New York’s underground country music scene, embrace a rugged country-folk style unlike anything the city’s heard-it-all music lovers are likely to experience -- a sound deliberately gritty and rough around the edges, drawing on influences as earthy as eighty-year-old jug band music and as unapologetic as ’70s outlaw country. John Dyer and Hilary Hawke are both songwriters/good friends who joined forces to create Hawke & Owl along with Mike Brown and Brian Geltner. Most notable is the unique musicianship from all four members that is captured in the styles of music most associated with Americana, oldtime, alt-bluegrass, and rock.

Concert | M. Ward / Mike Watt & Nels Cline / Yuka Honda & Dougie Bowne, indie rock

A trio of songwriting innovators on one noteworthy evening line-up. On the heels of the success of indie-pop outfit She & Him, singer/songwriter M. Ward (pictured) recently released his sixth solo effort, Hold Time, to much enthusiasm. NPR describes Hold Time as, “a gorgeously produced mix of finger-picked guitars, upright bass, and shuffling rhythms all tied together by his achy voice.” Currently the lead guitarist of rock band Wilco, Nels Cline is a guitarist and composer best known for his improvisational work and his use of effects pedals and looping devices. Cline has also performed and recorded on several occasions with punk rock luminary Mike Watt. They have collaborated in The Crew of the Flying Saucer, The Black Gang and in the jazz/punk/improv band Banyan with ex-Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins.
