One of the oldest free weekly events in Manhattan is Dixieland Jazz with the Gotham Jazzmen, which happen at noon every Tuesday. Another example of an event that you can attend all year round on weekdays is Federal Reserve Bank Tour, which takes place every week day at 1 pm (but advanced reservations are required). You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. If you are classical music afficionado, you can spend whole day in New York going from one free classical concert to another. If you love theater, then New York gives you an option to attend plays and musicals free of charge, or at deep discount. You just need to have information about it. Lesson | Kayaking and Community Rowing


Once again this summer local boating groups and boathouses from around the Harbor offer free kayaking and community rowing. There is no need to sign up in advance; boating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring clothes you don’t mind getting wet, and shoes or sandals suitable for walking on a rocky beach. No training or prior experience is needed. The only requirement is that you know how to swim. All equipment is provided free. Kayaking and canoeing will be inside a protected cove. Rowing will be in a group rowboat with an experienced guide. Children under 18 must have an adult guardian present.

Pianist, composer, and winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award for 2003, O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City.  In 2002, he created the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center due in part to a large and very demanding body of music in the genre of Latin and Afro Cuban Jazz.  His debut album with the Orchestra Una Noche Inolvidable earned a Grammy Award nomination in 2006.

Other | The Inwood Astronomy Project: Look at the Stars through a Telescope


THIS WILL OCCUR ONLY ON CLEAR NIGHTS, SO PLEASE CALL AHEAD TO CONFIRM. Come look through a telescope at the stars. The Inwood Astronomy Project is the largest public outreach program in New York City, hoping to get 5000 New Yorkers to come look through a telescope for the first time. They will be giving away posters, postcards, and other doodads. There is always a telescope to look through, and a knowledgeable astronomer to answer questions. Bring a flashlight for the climb to the hilltop. Call for details.
