Musical | Teacher! Teacher! or P.S. I Love You: The Dilemma of Educators

The story of the heavy hand of history on two teachers and a beleaguered principal. These educators teach against the background of the January 6th attempted coup, the desperate war in Ukraine, the constant threat of gun violence and the terrible mistakes of the Supreme Court. They see a growing consciousness in their students and a desire to take action. The educators, who endure the dilemma of teaching standard lessons in a time of crisis, now face the prospect of being asked to carry a gun! Their students bring to the classroom the debates heard around the kitchen tables in their homes. The principal finds a place for activism in school through a vivid dream that is the turning point of the play. The musical also celebrates the joys of a good book report, the brilliance of a Mother’s Day poem, an eloquent essay blasting climate change, and the ultimate triumph of graduation. Concert | Dancehall Reggae and Hip-Hop 90s Style with Slick Rick and More

Legendary label VP Records has been a bastion of Jamaican music in New York City since its founding in 1977. Riddims and beats are the heart of the story of Dancehall reggae and Hip Hop in 1990s New York. Producers, DJs, and artists from various neighborhoods, with an appreciation of Jamaica's latest hits, expanded the sound with tracks built on the same brands of drum machines and electronic keyboards of the era. The burgeoning New York dancehall scene went on to spawn multiple careers and countless street anthems. This show presents some of the creators of those anthemic hits with performances from Slick Rick, Wayne Wonder, Shinehead, Red Fox, and Lady G. DJs Jazzy Joyce and Peter Panic will set the mood with a mix of 90s hip hop and reggae that displays the cultural mix and dancefloor appeal of the era. Hosted by DJ Ralph McDaniels of Video Music Box and New York radio legend Dahved Levy, this one promises to be a hot summer night.

Dance Performance | Young Voices in Dance

This celebration of the next generation of choreographers includes: Sydney Burtis, The Difference "The Difference" is a tap dance work that fuses sound and movement to take you on a journey through both jazz and contemporary music. With these differing genres of music at play, the dancers hope to inspire feelings of positivity, self-worth, and community, as they can make a lasting difference in your life. Zachary Seto, Nostalgic Beings of Synesthesia - NYC Premiere "Nostalgic Beings of Synesthesia" is the continuation of constant conversations, the dialogue of speaking in a language unknown to humankind. It explores the physical experience of undulating spiritual verbal dialect through movement. Canadian choreographer Zachary Seto channels the constant flow of infinite gold light and spiraling energy that surrounds us. Camryn and Courtney Spero, Distance "Distance" investigates what it means to be part of a collective and how to reconcile the fleeting time and space we have to explore the relations within it. Set to New Order's 80s synth-pop track "Blue Monday," the juxtaposition of artificial kicks with deadpan vocals introduces questions of superficiality and authenticity in our interactions, as dancers enter and exit formation, are caught in repetition, and groove on and off the relentless beat. Kate Louissaint, Bird's Eye - World Premiere How do we process things we can't see? This piece is an exploration of sisterhood, fear, and learning when to fight versus when to surrender. It is a contemporary/modern based trio that relies heavily on the instrumentation, and the imagination of the audience. Lerato Ragontse, In Between Change "In Between Change" focuses on the beauty of technique. The piece emphasizes the importance of allowing yourself to appreciate the journey that leads to success. Through breath, the dancers showcase their elegance and strength while expressing the importance of breathing and letting things be, even if that means change. Anya Susan, In Conversation "In Conversation," created in 2020 and reworked in 2022, is a work about the reflection of the selves. With no true characterization of a 'younger' or 'older' self, it is meant to depict how the information learned throughout one's life can and will influence our future choices and responses. Without ever letting go of these identities, we learn to integrate and adapt. Reworking the piece in 2022 affirms this concept, providing a time capsule into the choreographer's then 18 year old mind that she gets to reexamine at 20. Myles King, The Last Foundry "The Last Foundry" navigates the complex relationship between power and vulnerability. While power and vulnerable struggle to coexist in society, this work highlights that they can. The choreographic process of this piece was highly collaborative with the dancers who are within the minority community and highlight the power and vulnerability that we all possess as minority people within the world. Shannon Harkins, Dreams and Nightmares of a Mutant People - NYC Premiere "Dreams and Nightmares of a Mutant People" explores escapism through character, artistry, and individual oddities. Classical ballet elements meet with expressive and enhanced movement to create an otherworldly environment.

Dance Performance | 5 Iconic NYC Dance Companies

Five of NYC's most iconic dance companies--Ballet Hispanico, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem--share the spotlight and an outdoor stage with dancers and pieces from across the companies. Participants: American Ballet Theatre - Children's Songs Dance by Jessica Lang A work for seven dancers, Children's Songs Dance by Jessica Lang takes its name from the music. Set to selections from Children's Songs by the late American jazz composer Chick Corea, the ballet was created on ABT Studio Company in January 2020 during a residency at The Pocantico Center in Tarrytown, New York. According to Lang, Children's Songs Dance "draws its inspiration from the transition in life between being a child and becoming an adult, with the goal of never losing the spirit of play." Ballet Hispanico - Club Havana by Pedro Ruiz Latin dancing at its best. The intoxicating rhythms of the conga, rumba, mambo, and cha cha are brought to life by choreographer Pedro Ruiz, himself a native of Cuba, as he imagined his very own "Club Havana." Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater - Cry by Alvin Ailey Choreography by Alvin Ailey Music: Alice Coltrane, Laura Nyro, Voices of East Harlem In 1971, Alvin Ailey choreographed the solo Cry as a birthday present for his mother on his stunning muse, the legendary Judith Jamison, who has taught the treasured role to subsequent generations of Ailey women. This physically and emotionally demanding tour-de-force - dedicated to "all Black women everywhere - especially our mothers" - went on to become an enduring work of American art. The ballet is made up of three parts - the first is set to Alice Coltrane's "Something about John Coltrane," the second to Laura Nyro's "Been on a Train" and the last has the Voices of East Harlem singing "Right On, Be Free." Dance Theatre of Harlem - When Love by Helen Pickett "Insistent time maps our days but when we are in love, we surrender," says choreographer Helen Pickett about When Love. Her exquisite pas de deux captures the wondrous feeling of timeless love. New York City Ballet - Allegro Brillante by George Balanchine George Balanchine called the exuberant Allegro Brillante "everything I know about classical ballet in thirteen minutes." One of George Balanchine's most joyous, pure dance pieces, Allegro Brillante is characterized by what Maria Tallchief -- the ballerina on whom the bravura leading role was created -- called "an expansive Russian romanticism." The ballet is set to Tschaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 3, a work that the composer created from sketches for a composition that was intended to be his Sixth Symphony, but which instead served as a single movement work which was published posthumously in 1894. Balanchine described this ballet as a concentrated essay in the extended classical vocabulary, in which a maximum amount of choreographic development is contained within a rather restricted area of time and space. One for All, World Premiere Lincoln Center Commission by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, commissioned by Lincoln Center and featuring dancers from each of the five companies, is set to Manteca by Funky Lowlives/Dizzy Gillespie.

Tour | Monet's Giverny - A Home and Garden (online)

Claude Monet lived and painted in Giverny from 1883 to his death in 1926. He purchased a house and property and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. He began painting the water lilies in 1899, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years. Monet gained much of his inspiration from his gardens and believed it was important to surround himself with nature and paint outdoors.
