Gallery Talk | Residential Rising: Lower Manhattan Since 9/11: Curator's Tour

Beyond the boundaries of Ground Zero, the most significant change in the lower Manhattan skyline since 9/11 has been the new growth of residential skyscrapers. The southern top of the island has sprouted a bevy of conspicuous, competitive, and highly individualistic towers. Very tall and generally slender, as befits the development strategy of luxury condos, many are designed by acclaimed architects whose celebrity adds marketing value. Eclectic in form and facades, there is no consistent style that marks them of their moment – yet their very presence on the skyline connects them to the monumentally significant events of 9/11. Downtown's evolution into a mixed residential neighborhood has doubled the population without drastically altering the historic urban fabric. A key dynamic of change has been the conversion of older office buildings into apartments – ranging in character from iconic landmarks such as the Woolworth Building and One Wall Street to back-office glass boxes of the 1960s and 70s. In the wake of 9/11, lower Manhattan faced daunting challenges of rebuilding and reinvention that were met through adaptive reuse, government incentives for density, and historic preservation, as well as new construction – a hopeful model of transformation of our COVID-recovery era.

City Walk | East Village Rock Tour: Part 1

Rock n' roll has been deeply rooted in our neighborhoods since the art form was first invented, with many of its greatest practitioners drawn here to live or perform, while others had their careers launched here. Alongside rock n' roll history is the rich history of archetecture in our neighborhoods. Discover both the history of those who impacted music, as well as the architectural history of the places where they made such an impact. From the Ramones to the Beastie Boys, and Patti Smith to Nirvana, our neighborhood is lined with the buildings that opened their doors to these icons of rock n' roll. Songs such as The Ramone's "I Just Wanna Have Something to Do" reference the precise locations in our neighborhoods. The venues that once set the stage for legendary bands may be of the past, but the buildings still stand in the present. No one tour can comprehensively cover all of the rock history in our neighborhood. Below find a detailed description for each tour so you can choose the one that most appeals to you. Follow the Village Preservation team as we guide you through the architectural history of rock n' roll and uncover the star-studded background of our streets.

Poetry Reading | Forefathers of Hip-Hop

The Last Poets are the forefathers of hip-hop, wielding poetry’s rhythmic and political power years before the first MC picked up a mic to move a crowd dancing to breakbeats. They formed in 1968 on Malcolm X’s birthday in Harlem as just three poets and a drummer, drawing their name from South African poet “Little Willie” Kgostile, who declared his era to be the last age of poets before the complete takeover of guns. After their self-titled debut cracked the US pop charts, they were targeted—along with other political agitators—by the FBI’s COINTELPRO, but continued to influence culture at the margins, releasing more than a dozen albums and inspiring and collaborating with multiple generations of hip-hop artists. Their current lineup includes Umar Bin Hassan, Baba Don, and founding member Abiodun Oyewole. Also: The IMPACT Repertory Theatre draws from the Harlem-based program for 12-19 year olds that uses performing arts and leadership training to empower underserved New York City youth, creating a safe space for young people to explore the issues they face through current events and their own personal experience. Harlem’s Bomb Shelter is a monthly retreat for young adult poets to unplug from every day life and express their experiences, thoughts, and ideas through poetry, song, and spoken word. SummerStage alum Greg Caz, a diehard Last Poets fan and record collector, DJs.
