Discussion | Are NYC’s Jails Ungovernable? (online)

From escalating rates of violence to a willful suppression of information by the Department of Correction, New York City’s jails are nothing short of a humanitarian crisis. Are we past the point of no return? With the federal monitor overseeing Rikers recently recommending that the Adams administration and DOC be held in contempt, and the United States Attorney now joining the calls for a receiver, the city is at a pivotal point about the future of NYC’s jails, and whether it is time for a new power to govern the jail system.  This event will bring together experts with deep experience working in the criminal justice system for a virtual event to assess what it takes to govern the jails and maintain the crucially important role of oversight.

Gallery Talk | Ceija Stojka: What Should I Be Afraid Of?: Exhibition Tour

Comprised of ninety paintings and drawings culled from collections in Europe and the United States, the installation celebrates the extraordinary art and life of Romni artist, writer, activist, and educator Ceija Stojka, survivor of Auschwitz, Ravensbrück, and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps. A monograph will be published on the occasion of this exhibition. Born to a traveling horse trading family of the Lovara Romani group in Austria in 1933, Stojka first began to write down her recollections in the mid-1980s when she was fifty-six years old. Her memoir Wir leben im Verborgenen: Aufzeichnungen einer Romni zwischen den Welten (We Live in Secrecy: Notes of a Romani Woman between Worlds), which was released in 1988, distinguished her as a leading advocate for remembering the Porajmos (Devouring), the Romani Holocaust. The exhibition title, What Should I be Afraid of?, cites one of Stojka’s poems, in which she describes how her personal experience of the Porajmos resulted in her fearless and passionate embrace of life going forward.

Book Discussion | The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever

In mid-20th century New York, on a landfilled street of lower Manhattan—named after 17th century Dutch settlers—a group of artists changed American art forever. In this compelling book talk celebrating the release of The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever, author Prudence Peiffer will join in conversation with moderator Ada Calhoun to capture this defining moment in American art and the profound role that place plays in creativity. Together they will delve into the pivotal role that Coenties Slip played in shaping the artistic journeys of renowned American artists that changed the landscape of Modern Art. The slip is where Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) honed his unique style through hard-edge abstractions and delicate line drawings; where Robert Indiana (1928–2018) developed sculptures from scavenged materials and paintings about the literary and maritime history of the neighborhood; where James Rosenquist (1933–2017) examined the role of advertising and consumer culture in art and society; where painter Jack Youngerman (1926–2020) and actress Delphine Seyrig (1932–1990) forged their own artistic visions; and where Agnes Martin (1912–2004) and Lenore Tawney (1907–2007) made singular impressions on the art world with abstract paintings and fiber arts respectively.

Book Discussion | Please Unsubscribe, Thanks!: How to Take Back Our Time, Attention, and Purpose in a World Designed to Bury Us in Bullshit

When the pandemic essentially brought the world to a standstill, author Julio Gambuto came to understand a powerful truth: in the pre-pandemic world, Americans were exhausted, lonely, unhappy, wildly overworked and overbooked, drowning in sea of constantly being on the go and needing to buy more, more, more. But when that pressure disappeared, people rediscovered what was important to them. They quit jobs that made them unhappy and moved their families to suburbs. Simple things like outdoor walks replaced gym memberships; home cooking and backyard gardens replaced takeout; less commuting meant more time for family and creative projects; and for perhaps the first time in a long time, people were being honest. Honest about what they wanted, what they believed in. Honest about the problems they were facing within their families, friend groups, workplaces, towns, and society overall. That honesty, he noticed, had the potential to make the ground shift. It created a capacity for change. But he also knew that it likely wouldn’t last, because the most powerful forces running our world would not allow it to. They wanted control over our clicks, our conversations, our dollars, our work, our votes—our lives. The only way that we could beat those systems, would be to resist the calls to keep moving, and to “go back to normal.” In order to change, we had to unsubscribe. Now, in Please Unsubscribe, Thanks!, Gambuto gives us a radical blueprint for the ways we can take a deep breath, renew and commit to a life that we really want, individually and collectively, from unsubscribing to emails and automated subscriptions to reevaluating the presence of people and ideas and habits that no longer serve us or make us happy.

Film | Sommerfilme: 8 Under-the-Radar German Films (online thru Aug. 31)

These eight summer films portray the warm season rarely as carefree as it’s supposed to be. Summer, in the popular imagination, is a sun-drenched, fun-filled time spent exploring and dreaming of the possibilities that life holds for us. It’s the days we might spend at the beach, by the lake, or in a too-hot city. Summer is also a time to enjoy cinema, whether it’s in an air-conditioned theater or under the stars. The past decades have brought us summer films we all know and love: iconic blockbusters, tender coming-of-age tales, stories of new beginnings, and feel-good movies to watch over and over again. Films: Thomas Arslan, Bright Nights (2017) Ilker Catak, I Am, I Was, I Will Be (2019) Leonie Krippendorff, Cocoon (2020) Sonja Kröner, The Garden (2017) Johannes Maria Schmitt, Neubau (2021) Tom Sommerlatte, Summers Downstairs (2015) Sven Taddicken, The Most Beautiful Couple (2018) Joya Thome, Queen of Niendorf (2017) All films in German with English subtitles.
