Film | Song Searcher: The Times and Toils of Moyshe Beregovsky (2020) (online)

Part biography, part Holocaust testimonial, and part mystery investigation, this film recounts the life of Moyshe Beregovsky, who is responsible for saving and preserving much of Ukraine's Yiddish musical tradition. Following ethnographers' footsteps around Ukraine and using testimony from survivors, the film reveals the tragic fate of the places where Beregovsky collected his music before the war and of the people who played and sang for him. Beregovsky's Archive, published decades after his death, has become a source of reference and interpretation for dedicated musicians around the world who perform their own versions of these songs, reviving the centuries-old European klezmer tradition that was almost destroyed. Violinist Igor Polesitsky, who is featured in the film, will perform a few seminal Yiddish pieces before the screening. Joining him in conversation after the screening is Elena Yakovich, the film's director, Natalie Azarov, producer, and Lyudmila Sholokhova, Curator of the Dorot Jewish Collection at the New York Public Library, who has worked extensively with the Beregovsky Archive.

Discussion | Designing Space (In Person AND Online)

How do we experience space? And what are the implications for the spaces we design? This has been a central question of Architecture, throughout its history to the present day. More recently, designers in Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) are also beginning to grapple with this question. This event aims to bring together these two approaches to "spatial design" to see what they can learn from one another. It also aims to bring together two approaches to understanding "spatial experience" itself. On the one hand, contemporary architecture is influenced by Philosophy, specifically the "Phenomenological" tradition of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. On the other hand, the revolutionary tools of Neuroscience are now being used to explore the question of Architecture. Through this multidisciplinary exchange, we aim to deepen our understanding of how we experience space, and what this all means for "spatial design."

Film | Sommerfilme: 8 Under-the-Radar German Films (online thru Aug 31)

These eight summer films portray the warm season rarely as carefree as it’s supposed to be. Summer, in the popular imagination, is a sun-drenched, fun-filled time spent exploring and dreaming of the possibilities that life holds for us. It’s the days we might spend at the beach, by the lake, or in a too-hot city. Summer is also a time to enjoy cinema, whether it’s in an air-conditioned theater or under the stars. The past decades have brought us summer films we all know and love: iconic blockbusters, tender coming-of-age tales, stories of new beginnings, and feel-good movies to watch over and over again. Films: Thomas Arslan, Bright Nights (2017) Ilker Catak, I Am, I Was, I Will Be (2019) Leonie Krippendorff, Cocoon (2020) Sonja Kröner, The Garden (2017) Johannes Maria Schmitt, Neubau (2021) Tom Sommerlatte, Summers Downstairs (2015) Sven Taddicken, The Most Beautiful Couple (2018) Joya Thome, Queen of Niendorf (2017) All films in German with English subtitles.

Forced from their home, Prospero and her daughter Miranda have survived for 12 years among the ruins of an abandoned island. As Prospero grows closer to getting the justice she desires, she witnesses her daughter fall in love, listens to the wisdom of spirit ancestors, and discovers that sometimes forgiveness is the only way to break cycles and right the course for the next generation.
