Book Club | Speedboat by Renata Adler

Winner of the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, this is one of the defining books of the 1970s, an experimental novel about a young journalist trying to navigate life in America. When Speedboat burst on the scene in the late ’70s it was like nothing readers had encountered before. It seemed to disregard the rules of the novel, but it wore its unconventionality with ease. Reading it was a pleasure of a new, unexpected kind. Above all, there was its voice, ambivalent, curious, wry, the voice of Jen Fain, a journalist negotiating the fraught landscape of contemporary urban America. Party guests, taxi drivers, brownstone dwellers, professors, journalists, presidents, and debutantes fill these dispatches from the world as Jen finds it.

Discussion | Religion and Literature in Dialogue: a Five Session Course

Religion is a multi-faceted phenomenon that includes doctrines, stories, rituals, and communal practices. What happens when a poet or novelist appropriates a story from the Bible, a teaching, or liturgical practice from Christianity or Judaism and reshapes it according to her or his own imagination? How do writers exercise poetic license with religion, affirming some parts of it while pushing back on others? In this five-part class students look at five themes of perennial interest to Christianity and Judaism—love, death, evil, suffering, and forgiveness—that have also intrigued poets, novelists, essayists, and short-story writers. Students will read excerpts from the Bible, the liturgy, and theology in comparison with creative writing from Homer to John Donne to Emily Dickinson to Mary Gordon, among many others. Each class will turn on a small anthology of texts from the worlds of religion and literature arranged to invite comparison and contrast. Professor Ernie Rubinstein holds a PhD in comparative religion from Northwestern University. He is author of the book, Religion and the Muse: The Vexed Relation Between Religion and Western Literature (SUNY Press, 2007). He has taught in NYU’s School of Professional Studies since 1995. This class is adapted from another course he regularly teaches there on the same topic. Please register! Limit of 15 students!

Discussion | Can Proust Make You a Writer?

Writer Janet McGiffin will be discussing how she wrote her four-volume Byzantine historical fiction/mystery/young adult series while taking a two-year course on Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. “Proust kept me going—and sane,” McGiffin says. “I learned that it’s ok to write for eleven years without a glimpse of a publisher. It’s not lost time—Proust wrote for twenty years! I learned it’s ok to write about one character for so long that the book has to be divided into volumes. Proust sent his manuscript to a publisher who said it was like wandering lost in a forest!” McGiffin’s writing was influenced by Proust’s penetrating insights into human behavior and his jabs at snobbery, elitism, and other human foibles: “Proust showed me how to write about a period of history and bring the characters to life.”  McGiffin wrote a mystery series for Fawcett years ago. This series concerns the eighth-century Byzantine Empress Irini, who, McGiffin believes, poisoned her emperor father-in-law, her husband, two patriarchs, and had her son murdered—all to gain the throne. Scotland Street Press divided the story into four volumes, the first and second being Betrothal & Betrayal, and Poison is a Woman’s Weapon. The last two will come out in February 2024. Book signing to follow.

Film | Sommerfilme: 8 Under-the-Radar German Films (online thru Aug 31)

These eight summer films portray the warm season rarely as carefree as it’s supposed to be. Summer, in the popular imagination, is a sun-drenched, fun-filled time spent exploring and dreaming of the possibilities that life holds for us. It’s the days we might spend at the beach, by the lake, or in a too-hot city. Summer is also a time to enjoy cinema, whether it’s in an air-conditioned theater or under the stars. The past decades have brought us summer films we all know and love: iconic blockbusters, tender coming-of-age tales, stories of new beginnings, and feel-good movies to watch over and over again. Films: Thomas Arslan, Bright Nights (2017) Ilker Catak, I Am, I Was, I Will Be (2019) Leonie Krippendorff, Cocoon (2020) Sonja Kröner, The Garden (2017) Johannes Maria Schmitt, Neubau (2021) Tom Sommerlatte, Summers Downstairs (2015) Sven Taddicken, The Most Beautiful Couple (2018) Joya Thome, Queen of Niendorf (2017) All films in German with English subtitles.
