You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. Book Discussion | The Island of Extraordinary Captives: A Painter, A Poet, an Heiress, and a Spy in a World War II British Internment Camp (online)


During Hitler’s rise to power in the 1930s, tens of thousands of German and Austrian Jews escaped and found refuge in Britain. After war broke out and paranoia gripped the English nation, Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered that these innocent asylum seeks – so-called “enemy aliens” – be interned. Peter Fleischmann, who had escaped Berlin on a Kindertransport, was one such asylum seeker. He was sent to Hutchinson Camp on the Isle of Man, where he found one of history’s most astounding prison populations: renowned professors, composers, journalists, and artists. Together they created a thriving cultural community, complete with art exhibitions, lectures, musical performances, and poetry readings. The artists welcomed Peter as their pupil and forever changed the course of his life. Meanwhile, suspicions grew that a real spy was hiding among them — one connected to a vivacious heiress from Peter’s past. Simon Parkin’s new book draws from unpublished first-person accounts and newly declassified government documents to detail this untold story.

A rush-hour fender-bender on New York City's crowded FDR Drive, under most circumstances, wouldn't set off a chain reaction that could decimate two people's lives. But on this day, at this time, a minor collision will turn two complete strangers into vicious adversaries. Their means of destroying each other might be different, but their goals, ultimately, will be the same: Each will systematically try to dismantle the other's life in a reckless effort to reclaim something he has lost. Director: Roger Michell Cast: Ben Affleck, Samuel L. Jackson, Toni Collette, Sydney Pollack, William Hurt, Amanda Peet Ben Affleck is an American actor and filmmaker. He gained wide recognition when he and Matt Damon won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for writing Good Will Hunting (1997), which they also starred in. He established himself as a leading man in studio films, including the disaster film Armageddon (1998), the war drama Pearl Harbor (2001), and the thrillers The Sum of All Fears and Changing Lanes (both 2002). After a career downturn, Affleck made a comeback by portraying George Reeves in the biopic Hollywoodland (2006). Samuel L. Jackson is an American actor and producer. Jackson's early film roles include Coming to America (1988), Juice (1992), True Romance (1993), Menace II Society (1993), and Fresh (1994). His collaborations with Spike Lee led to greater prominence with films such as School Daze (1988), Do the Right Thing (1989), Mo' Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), Oldboy (2013), and Chi-Raq (2015). Jackson's breakout performance was as Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino's crime drama Pulp Fiction (1994), which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He further collaborated with Tarantino, acting in Jackie Brown (1997), Django Unchained (2012), and The Hateful Eight (2015).

Gallery Talk | Ceija Stojka: What Should I Be Afraid Of?: Exhibition Tour


Comprised of ninety paintings and drawings culled from collections in Europe and the United States, the installation celebrates the extraordinary art and life of Romni artist, writer, activist, and educator Ceija Stojka, survivor of Auschwitz, Ravensbrück, and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps. A monograph will be published on the occasion of this exhibition. Born to a traveling horse trading family of the Lovara Romani group in Austria in 1933, Stojka first began to write down her recollections in the mid-1980s when she was fifty-six years old. Her memoir Wir leben im Verborgenen: Aufzeichnungen einer Romni zwischen den Welten (We Live in Secrecy: Notes of a Romani Woman between Worlds), which was released in 1988, distinguished her as a leading advocate for remembering the Porajmos (Devouring), the Romani Holocaust. The exhibition title, What Should I be Afraid of?, cites one of Stojka’s poems, in which she describes how her personal experience of the Porajmos resulted in her fearless and passionate embrace of life going forward.

Who set the mysterious fire that burned down much of New York City shortly after the British took the city during the Revolutionary War? Comprised of three musicians with exceptional command of their instruments, the group's repertoire draws heavily from re-imaginations of jazz standards in a way that both defies genre and corresponds to any modern jazz fan. The group uses their trust and understanding of one another's musical tendencies to create passionate musical soundscapes, which range from traditional jazz to the progressive rock/classical-influenced music.

Jazz | Legendary Jazz Bassist Who's Played with Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie and Billie Holiday


Legendary bassist Paul E. West is a native of Harlem. He began his studies in violin at the age of six, studying with Albert Polnarioff until the age of nineteen. Paul graduated from the prestigious High School of Music and Art in New York City, and received his B.A. in music from Wagner College in Staten Island, New York, where he changed his instrument from Violin to Bass Violin. Paul is an international performing artist, an accomplished musician, conductor, arranger, who is known for his achievements as a (European) classical and American classical, jazz performer and educator. During his career as a bassist, he has performed with prominent jazz artists including: Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae, Johnny Mathis, Billy Eckstine, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, Milt Jackson Quartet, Kenny Barron Duo/Trio, Randy Weston, Barry Harris Quintet, Abby Lincoln, Heath Brothers Quartet, and the Billy Taylor Trio - Dr. Billy Taylor, later appointed him the third Executive Director of Jazzmobile, Inc. Upon leaving Jazzmobile he continued his career as an arts administrator as Executive Director of the Henry Street Settlement for over 30 years. In his role as a conductor he conducted for Dizzy Gillespie and the Arrow Jazz Band in Japan, the Henry Street Settlement Symphony Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall and for a string orchestra at the Montreal Jazz Festival with soloist, Randy Weston; and in 2003 he took the baton from his brother Charles Lonny West and Paul has been leading the Bethune Big Band ever since.

A talk on Charlie Parker with seven of the top names in jazz. Hosted by Keanna Faircloth with the members of The Cookers as they share their connections to the music and legacy of Charlie Parker. The Cookers are Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, Billy Hart, David Weiss and Donald Harrison. Each member of the Cookers has spent time leading his own series of groups as well, and each has a keenly individual sound. But it’s the unmistakable power of teamwork that makes this music so commanding and resonates with a kind of depth and beauty that speaks of the seasoned track record of its principals (combined, the group has over 250 years of experience in the jazz world and has been a part of over 1,000 recordings). You can feel the collective weight of that experience in their CDs and especially in their live performances.
