Conference | Frozen Conflicts Twenty Years After the Fall of the Soviet Union

Two decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union the conflicts in Abkhazia, Nagorno Karabakh, South Ossetia and Transnistria remain unresolved and their dynamics continue to impact political stability, state-building and great power competition in the former Soviet Union. Over the last years, the international community’s strategy for addressing them has varied significantly. By bringing together leading scholars, policy analysts, and NGO representatives from Europe, the United States and Eurasia to discuss these issues we hope to provide an opportunity to reflect on the last twenty years and to think about possible steps forward.

Symposium | Social Forces Revisited

Two thematic panels followed by a closing, keynote address will allow for discussion on topics as diverse as the role of social documentary both in the progressive era and the contemporary moment, the history of social work, and how contemporary public policy is shaping the evolution of urban America. The first panel will offer a round-table conversation exploring historical perspectives on social work. This session will examine Progressive-era campaigns in the realm of social welfare, the tensions and common ground among different human service organizations, and the multiple strains of social work in the 20th century. A second panel on community activism and media will address how charity and welfare organizations since the progressive era have used various media (photography, lantern slides, film, journals, newspapers, etc.) as “social publicity” as well as pedagogical tools to engage all members of the community (including those underprivileged groups the organizations sought to aid) to take personal and political action. Professor Michael Katz will offer a keynote address titled “From Underclass to Entrepreneur: New Technologies of Poverty Work in Urban America,” that stems from work on his new book Why Don’t American Cities Burn? published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Lecture | Subversive Shaw: An Introduction to the Life and Work of George Bernard Shaw

Under the cloak of sublime comedy, Shaw sought to expose the hypocrisy of Victorian society and morality. He was the author of some sixty plays (including Pygmalion, Major Barbara, and Caesar and Cleopatra), prefaces which were sometimes longer than the plays themselves, five novels, music and theatre criticism, innumerable socialist pamphlets and political tracts, and several thousand letters. Talk | A Talk by Priya Jaikumar, Author of Cinema at the End of Empire

Priya Jaikumar is Associate Professor in the Department of Critical Studies at the University of Southern California. A historian and theorist of colonial and postcolonial cinemas, her writing has focused on questions of state power, comparative modernities and aesthetics, and transnational cultural formations. Her book Cinema at the End of Empire: A Politics of Transition in Britain and India from Duke University Press (2006) details the intertwined industrial, regulatory and aesthetic histories of British and Indian cinema during the late colonial period. Her scholarly work has appeared in Cinema Journal, The Moving Image, Post Script, Screen, World Literature Today, and in recent anthologies like Hollywood Abroad and Transnational Feminism in Film and Media. Her current projects include a co-edited anthology on the state titled Undoing Leviathan, and research on the visual production of place in cinema about South Asia. She is writing on the emergence, management and persistence of territorial imaginaries that depend on the mimetic capacities of photography and cinema. This interest has taken her into a few related areas of visual study, such as: colonial tourist photography; circulation of images of insurgent cities; film and architecture; Euro-American filmmakers using Indian film locales; and location shooting more broadly. Refreshments will be provided.
