McKenzie Wark, associate professor of culture and media at Eugene Lang College, the New School for Liberal Arts, will deliver the keynote address titled Spectacles of Disintegration. Reading | Transmissions: The Literature of AIDS


The School of Writing marks the 30th anniversary of the start of the AIDS epidemic with a one-day event featuring two panels. The first is on writing through 1994–1995, the advent of protease inhibitors, the first of the new drugs that radically lengthened survival time for people with AIDS, coinciding with the end of the heyday of AIDS literature. The second panel explores work from 1996-2011 on HIV. The event closes with renowned writers reading their work and the work of writers who have died from AIDS. Panelists and readers include Rabih Alammedine, Michael Denneny, Gary Indiana, Zia Jaffrey, John Kelly, Larry Kramer, Jennie Livingston, Dale Peck, Amy Scholder, Sarah Schulman, Edmund White, and John Weir. Concert | Joanne Shenandoah, Grammy-Winning Performer


Shenandoah is an Iroquois singer, composer and acoustic guitarist. She is a member of the Wolf Clan of the Oneida Nation, of the Haudenosaunee Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy. Her music is a combination of traditional songs and melodies with a blend of traditional and contemporary instrumentation. She has recorded more than 15 albums and won a multitude of awards, and given an Honorary Doctorate of Music by Syracuse University. She was awarded a Grammy Award for her part in the album Sacred Ground. Shows at 1pm and 3pm.

Discussion | Danspace Project's Choreographic Center Without Walls


Danspace Project's Choreographic Center Without Walls (CW2) continues this fall with performances, production residencies and conversations. As part of CW2 activities, Danspace Project will present three conversations entitled "Conversations Without Walls." Danspace Project Executive Director Judy Hussie-Taylor invited scholar Jenn Joy to organize the series around current issues in choreography. What does choreography (as concept and as practice) produce socially, politically, relationally? Each event will unfold in three hour-long conversations followed by Q&A with all participants. "Choreography under the influence" traces the effects of history, language and pedagogy on contemporary practice. The group’s music is captivating and engaging, featuring exciting rhythms and swinging, soul-stirring melodies. Each musician’s distinctive background and personal experience influence Paul Beaudry & Pathways, in addition to the inspiring musicianship of Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock, and Sam Jones, among others. Rousing scat singing, fiery instrumental improvisations, and lively vocal exchanges are par for the course at the group’s dynamic performances. Book Signing | Book, Limited Edition Posters and Catalogue Signing by Brian, Wendy & Toby Froud


Brian Froud is the premier fairy painter and illustrator, with over 30 books in publication and over 8 million books sold to date including Good Faeries/Bad Faeries (Hugo and Chesley Award), Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book (Hugo Award), Faeries' Oracle and Lady Cottington's Fairy Album. He is widely known for his conceptual design work on feature films including Jim Henson's Labyrinth (1987) and The Dark Crystal (1982), where he met his wife, Wendy Froud. Wendy has also worked as a sculptor and puppet maker for the Muppet Show, Muppet Movie and The Empire Strikes Back (as fabricator of Yoda). Their son Toby Froud started his career as baby "Toby" in the Labyrinth. To date, Toby works as a stilt-walker and dancing bear with a troupe that performs throughout England in a costume designed by his mother. He is currently working on a film project featuring his own puppets.

Coinciding with the publication of his photography book, Beasley’s Earth Meets Spirit explores the spiritual aspects of people and place and is concerned with how the sacred is recognized and expressed in everyday life. He hopes that his photographs act as prayer-like offerings meant as a departure point for the viewer’s own visual or spiritual journey. Much of his personal projects, including “Sacred Sites of the Lakota,” “Disappearing Green Space,” “Silent Witness: Genocide and the Landscape,” “Sacred Places” and “Earth Meets Spirit” are supported by grants and commissions and have been widely exhibited and collected. Special Guest Artists: MARK PTASHNE, violin with Raman Ramakrishnan, cello, and Steven Beck, piano. MARK PTASHNE holds the Ludwig Chair of Molecular Biology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He has studied the violin with Roman Totenberg and Eric Rosenblith in Boston, with Patty Kopec in New York, and with Mela Tenenbaum in Brooklyn. He is a past participant in The Roundtop Music Festival (Roundtop, Texas), the Hurwitz Chamber Music Festival (Cinque Terra, Italy) and The Yellow Barn Music Festival (Putney, Vermont). Now he plays at the IMAI Festival in Fryeburg, Maine, the Pro-Am Seminar in Cooperstown, NY, and the Tenenbaum Festival in Prince Edward Island, Canada. As a former founding member of the Daedalus Quartet, cellist RAMAN RAMAKRISHNAN won the grand prize at the 2001 Banff International String Quartet Competition.
