Parade | The …how time passes… Parade

Slowly scrape across a fine tooth comb, and you hear a rhythm; do it quickly and it becomes a pitch. “…how time passes…” uses the same phenomenon to turn glacially slow percussion into recognizable holiday melodies for a marathon six-hour parade. Composer Chris Peck’s festive, three-minute medley of holiday songs is dramatically slowed down to 1/120th speed, and played over six hours by a group of dedicated percussionists led by Doug Perkins walking down the entire length of Broadway. Later, a video of the parade by Alex Wroten will be sped up to reveal the holiday medley at its regular tempo, as the participants appear to traverse Manhattan at lightning speed. Featuring performers, videographers and tech wizards from the Dartmouth Contemporary Music Lab. Walk along with the percussionists, take a turn playing the drum (precision is required (call if interested), or meet at the end to sing carols (at a normal tempo).

In performance, the brilliantly gifted guitarist draws on the wide range of music he has explored over the years, from folk songs and blues, through popular standards new and old, and on to the varied expanses of the classical realm. His special joy is to bring his impressions of this broad landscape to life through the guitar’s pliant voice, interweaving selections in a way that gives audiences a mix of old and new that has both contrast and continuity.

Parade | Village in Volume Parade

Led by the percussion group TIGUE and drummers from this summer’s Inuksuit concert, participants will navigate through the streets of Manhattan, picking up found instruments along the way provided by local merchants, or created by students from Parsons The New School for Design. At each location, the group will be given directions on how to produce specific sounds from each object they are given, which they will carry out on the way to the next location. Community members are encouraged to join at the start, or en route. Bring plastic bags for the beginning of the event; all other materials will be provided.

Parade | Bell by Bell Parade -- and You Can Be One of the Bell Players

Artist Tom Peyton distributes fifty color-coded bells to the crowd, one color per note. At the front of the parade, a team of conductors waves corresponding colored flags to lead the group in slowly moving music, written by a variety of composers: when the conductor raises his red and green flags, everyone with red and green bells start ringing, and so on for each color, creating a sonorous, atmospheric soundscape throughout the East Village. Bell music written by composers Eric Beach, Nat Evans, Eric Frederic, and others to be announced. Just show up with your hands free!
