Opening Reception | Lower East Side, 1975: Portrait of a Changing Jewish Neighborhood

The Lower East Side has long been a gateway for new immigrants, and these photos capture the vibrant life of the area. Book Discussion | Sister Snake by Amanda Lee Koe

Sisterhood is difficult for Su and Emerald. Su leads a sheltered, moneyed life as the picture-perfect wife of a conservative politician in Singapore. Emerald is a nihilistic sugar baby in New York, living from whim to whim and using her charms to make ends meet. But they share a secret: once, they were snakes, basking under a full moon in Tang dynasty China. A thousand years later, their mysterious history is the only thing still binding them together. When Emerald experiences a violent encounter in Central Park and Su boards the next flight to New York, the two reach a tenuous reconciliation for the first time in decades. Su convinces Emerald to move to Singapore so she can keep an eye on her—but she soon begins to worry that Emerald’s irrepressible behavior will out them both, in a sparkling, affluent city where everything runs like clockwork and any deviation from the norm is automatically suspect. Sister Snake explores chosen family, queerness, passing, and the struggle against conformity. Reimagining the Chinese folktale “The Legend of the White Snake,” this is a novel about being seen for who you are—and, ultimately, how to live free. At this event, Amanda Lee Koe will discuss her new book.

Discussion | The “Jew-Hunt” Pogrom in Amsterdam and Beyond: It Could Happen Here (in-person and online)

Eighty-six years after mobs destroyed synagogues, shattered shop windows and assaulted Jews in a spasm of hatred known as Kristallnacht, Jews in Europe fled for their lives again, this time in Amsterdam. A “Jew hunt,” New York Times columnist Bret Stephens called the attacks surrounding a soccer match between Israeli and Dutch teams, pointing out that the haters had said more about “Cancer Jews” than about Gaza. “Grotesque as the phrase is, it can no longer surprise,” he continued, punctuating his point with a reminder of recent anti-Jewish abuse and assaults in America as well as in Europe. Even as Stephens was writing, Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, was flying to Amsterdam to meet with the Dutch prime minister, justice minister and national security adviser as well as leaders from the local Jewish community. Writing in USA Today after his trip, he warned about what the violence in Amsterdam and the hostility on American campuses may foreshadow.

Book Discussion | Newshawks in Berlin: The Associated Press and Nazi Germany (online)

After the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, the Associated Press brought news about life under the Third Reich to tens of millions of American readers. The AP was America’s most important source for foreign news but to continue reporting under the Nazi regime the agency made both journalistic and moral compromises. Its reporters and photographers in Berlin endured onerous censorship, complied with anti-Semitic edicts, and faced accusations of spreading pro-Nazi propaganda. Yet despite restrictions, pressures, and concessions, AP’s Berlin “newshawks” provided more than a thousand U.S. newspapers with extensive coverage of the Nazi campaigns to conquer Europe and annihilate the continent’s Jews. Newshawks in Berlin reveals how the Associated Press covered Nazi Germany from its earliest days through the aftermath of World War II. Larry Heinzerling and Randy Herschaft accessed previously classified government documents; plumbed diary entries, letters, and memos; and reviewed thousands of published stories and photos to examine what the AP reported and what it left out. Their research uncovers fierce internal debates about how to report in a dictatorship, and it reveals decisions that sometimes prioritized business ambitions over journalistic ethics. The book also documents the AP’s coverage of the Holocaust and its unveiling. Featuring comprehensive research and a memorable cast of characters, this book illuminates how the dilemmas of reporting on Nazi Germany remain familiar for journalists reporting on authoritarian regimes today.

Book Discussion | Rental House: Clashing with the In-Laws

Keru and Nate are college sweethearts who marry despite their family differences: Keru’s strict, Chinese, immigrant parents demand perfection while Nate’s rural, white, working-class family distrusts his intellectual ambitions and his “foreign” wife. Some years into their marriage, the couple invites their families on vacation. At a Cape Cod beach house, and later at a luxury Catskills bungalow, Keru, Nate, and their giant sheepdog navigate visits from in-laws and unexpected guests, all while wondering if they have what it takes to answer the big questions: How do you cope when your spouse and your family of origin clash? How many people (and dogs) make a family? And when the pack starts to disintegrate, what can you do to shepherd everyone back together?  With author Weike Wang
