Lecture | Gertrud Kauders, Jewish Artist from Prague: Surprises, Enigmas, Opportunities (online)

In July 2018, as workmen were demolishing a house on Prague’s outskirts they were astonished by works of art falling from a ceiling. Nobody had known that the works were hidden there. The art turned out to be that of Gertrud Kauders who had hidden the contents of her whole studio in the house of a friend before being deported first to Theresienstadt and then to Majdanek where she was murdered on arrival in May 1942. Kauders was a serious and inventive artist, quite well known in Prague’s art world of the time. She worked in oils, pencil, crayon, watercolour and gouache. Now her work is held by museums around the world. In this presentation, great nephew Simon During will tell the story of Kauders’ art, its recovery and distribution both to museums and the family. It goes on to think about what Kauders’ art means to us today. Simon During, born in Wellington NZ in 1950, is a professor of English Literature who has worked in universities around the world, including the University of Melbourne, UC Berkeley, Johns Hopkins and the Freie Universität, Berlin.

Book Discussion | Great Bars of New York City: Drink Up

In a city of over eight million people, New York City's bars, pubs, dives, speakeasies, and cocktail lounges provide respite from the relentless pace of daily life, offering an intoxicating blend of camaraderie and ambiance. They've even helped to influence major world events over the years, from Fraunces Tavern being turned into George Washington's official headquarters during the Revolutionary War, to the uprising at Stonewall Inn which ignited the queer liberation movement, to the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel, which features a mural by the early 20th-century painter Maxfield Parrish. Great Bars of New York City's authors James T. and Karla L. Murray are a husband-and-wife team of architectural and interior photographers and videographers based in New York City. Since 1997, they have focused on the streetscape, capturing portraits of storefronts and shop owners to reflect the spirit, energy, and cultural diversity of various neighborhoods. With their new book, they pay tribute to quintessential New York culture and its small businesses.

Book Discussion | Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner (In Person AND Online!)

Join WNYC's Alison Stewart and Taffy Brodesser-Akner for a live conversation about her newest book, Long Island Compromise. In 1980, a wealthy businessman named Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his driveway, brutalized, and held for ransom. He is returned to his wife and kids less than a week later, only slightly the worse, and the family moves on with their lives. Forty years later, no one in his family—not Carl, not his wife, Ruth, not his three grown children—seem to have gotten over anything. Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s new novel, Long Island Compromise, spans the entirety of one family’s history over decades and generations all the way up to the outrageous present.

Talk | On the Edge of Water and Change: John T. Krawchuk's Photography of the West Village Waterfront in the Early 1990s (online)

An evening with John T. Krawchuk examining the West Village waterfront on the brink of radical change and redevelopment in the early 1990s. As part of his 1995 Columbia University graduate thesis in Historic Preservation, Krawchuk photodocumented the Meatpacking District, Far West Village, and Hudson River. This project took place at a pivotal time in the neighborhood's history. The contemporary removal of disused sections of the High Line south of Gansevoort Street and the conversion of the abandoned Hudson River piers and waterfront to parkland coincided with and helped spur dramatic gentrification and development in the area, which had been a gritty backwater for decades. Krawchuk will be joined in conversation with Village Preservation's Executive Director Andrew Berman and Director of Preservation and Research Dena Tasse-Winter to help further highlight life in this unique part of our neighborhood as it was about to undergo an irrevocable change.

Screening | Joseph Brodsky: Epitaph for a Centaur, Six Years Later: Short Film and Discussion

A panel discussion and screening of a short film examining the life of Joseph Brodsky, the celebrated Russian-Jewish American writer and Nobel Laureate. Through analyses of two of Brodsky's evocative poems, "Epitaph for a Centaur" and "Six Years Later," this 25-minute film encapsulates Brodsky's exploration of identity, belonging, and the passage of time. The film examines the paradoxical relationship between the U.S. and Russia during the Cold War, intricately portrayed through the symbolic figure of the centaur--a representation of Brodsky's own multi-faceted existence as Russian, American, and Jewish. By delving into the intricate language of Brodsky's poetry, this short film explores Brodsky's Jewish identity, his legacy, and the political undertones of his writing.

Book Discussion | The Chief Rabbi's Funeral: The Untold Story of America's Largest Antisemitic Riot (online)

On July 30, 1902, tens of thousands of mourners lined the streets of New York's Lower East Side to bid farewell to the city's chief rabbi, the eminent Talmudist Jacob Joseph. All went well until the procession crossed Sheriff Street, where the six-story R. Hoe and Company printing press factory towered over the intersection. Without warning, scraps of steel, iron bolts, and scalding water rained down and injured hundreds of mourners, courtesy of antisemitic factory workers, accompanied by insults and racial slurs. The police compounded the attack when they arrived on the scene: under orders from the inspector in charge, who made no effort to distinguish aggressors from victims, his officers began beating up Jews, injuring dozens. To the Yiddish-language daily Forward, the bloody attack on Jews was not unlike the pogroms many Jews remembered bitterly from the Old Country, although no one was killed. But this was America, and Jews were now present in sufficient numbers, and possessed sufficient political clout, to fight back. Fed up with being persecuted, New York's Jews set a pattern for the future by deftly pursuing justice for the victims. They forced trials and disciplinary hearings, accelerated retirements and transfers within the corrupt police department, and engineered the resignation of the police commissioner. Scott D. Seligman's The Chief Rabbi's Funeral is the first book-length account of this event and its aftermath.

Classical Music | Klezmer Music Concert

Klezmer is an instrumental musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Central and Eastern Europe. The tradition includes dance tunes, ritual melodies, and virtuosic improvisations played for listening. Klezmer also incorporates elements of many other musical genres including Ottoman (especially Greek and Romanian) music, Baroque music, German and Slavic folk dances, and religious Jewish music. When the musical tradition was popularized in the United States in the 1910s and 1920s, it lost some of its traditional ritual elements and adopted elements of American big band and popular music. After the destruction of Jewish life in Eastern Europe during the Holocaust, and a general fall in the popularity of klezmer music in the United States, the music began to be popularized again in the late 1970s in the "Klezmer Revival." During the 1980s and onwards, musicians experimented with traditional and experimental forms of the genre, releasing fusion albums combining the genre with jazz, punk, and other styles.
