Performance | The Books of Jacob: A Unique Digital Theater Experience Happening in 7 Locations Around the World

In this quantum, Kabbalistic, VR spectacle -- written by Olga Tokarczuk and directed by Krzysztof Garbaczewski -- the story of Jacob Frank comes to life simultaneously in seven locations around the world in a synchronized performance happening in New York, Serbia, Poland, Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Greece. Actors performing on physical stages in each country and on a digital stage in virtual reality, capture a world on the brink of change as they animate the story of a young Jew in the 18th-century who experiences ecstatic visions travels across the Habsburg and Ottoman empires, meeting heretical condemnation one moment and messianic recognition the next. The Books of Jacob is a live performance that audiences can experience in-person in each country or online in VRChat. Audiences in New York will have the opportunity to put on a VR headset and experience the production digitally, as well as from their seat where the virtual environment will be projected and layered into the scenography. The digital performance network activated as part of this project transforms how theater is experienced and expands the theater's global reach. Real-time translation services and subtitles in the virtual environment facilitates this multilingual production. Garbaczewski's project draws from Nobel prize-winning Polish author Olga Tokarczuk's epic historical novel The Books of Jacob. Garbaczewski was first drawn to the book while incorporating metaphysical texts into his theatre practice, especially those of Jewish messianic thinker Sabbatai Zevi and Jacob Frank - the 18th Century man who claimed to be Sabbatai Zevi reincarnated. Tokarczuk's novel takes on the perspectives of Jacob's followers and others who witnessed his establishment of a transformative religious movement against the kaleidoscopic backdrop of Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, and Greece. Despite its power in 18th Century Europe, Jacob's movement has largely been forgotten by European history. Struck by Jacob's ideas and their relevance to today, Garbaczewski is motivated to explore the work as a multiplayer virtual reality experience.

Concert | Ger Suite: Film and Concert Celebrate the Rich History of Polish Jews

The premieres of two new works commissioned by the POLIN museum -- a documentary film and a concert reviving the art of Jewish mandolin orchestras. These events celebrate the rich history of Polish Jews and the renewal of this heritage for the next generation. This concert is the American premiere of Ger Suite, a moving new work commissioned by POLIN Museum, composed by Polish virtuoso Marcin Masecki, and performed by the composer and the orchestra in New York for the museum's 10th anniversary. The event is part of the New York City Jewish Book Festival at the Museum of Jewish Heritage. Conceived by Israeli-American Avner Yonai and directed by renowned multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall, the Ger Mandolin Orchestra resurrects a little-known musical form that was once-widely popular across eastern Europe and in North American immigrant communities. The group brings to life a unique repertoire of Jewish, East European folk and light classical music, using the complete range of mandolin family instruments (mandolin, mandola, octave mandolin, mandocello, mandobass). Their rare and moving concert appearances over the last dozen years have been met with overwhelming audience and critical acclaim. Now, in its first foray into "new" music, the Orchestra will premiere repertoire from one of Poland's most prolific and idiosyncratic artists. Pianist/composer Marcin Masecki is known for his virtuosic fusion of styles spanning jazz, classical, and folk, blurring the line between high art and popular entertainment. "Gersuita" is a 6-part cycle of compositions created by Masecki specifically for the Ger Mandolin Orchestra. In its full version, the piece was first presented in Toronto in March 2024, during an extraordinary concert at the Glenn Gould Studio. This new chapter in the history of what seemed to be a forgotten art form, the mandolin orchestra, was rewarded with a nearly 10-minute standing ovation from the audience.

Play | All Eight: Teammates and Rivals

In Lilly Camp's play, nine freshmen women have been recruited to a Northeast collegiate rowing team, where every morning at 6am they compete with each other for the best times, lowest body weights, and most influential seats, until race day when they are asked to put it all aside and row together as teammates in one boat. Off the water, their coach shows up at their parties and drinks with them, makes lewd comments about their bodies, and is allegedly sleeping with one of them. Over the course of their freshman year, All Eight examines how the world of collegiate sports drives these young women with varied power to fight to win– races, love, power– at the expense of even each other. A student production.
