Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Start times: 10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm

Book Discussion | The Ecosystem of Exile Politics: Why Proximity and Precarity Matter for Bhutan’s Homeland Activists

Susan Banki's book is one of the very few scholarly examinations of Bhutan’s exiled refugee population, and the activism in which its leaders engaged. The book relays the events in Bhutan that led to the exodus of one-sixth of the population, and then recounts the activism by Bhutan's refugee diaspora that followed in response. The book’s research shows that activism functions like a physical ecosystem, in which hubs of activism in different locations interact to pressure the home country.

A woman who only wants a picture-perfect life is close to losing everything. Fanny Trellis has her choice of men, and she picks wealthy Job Skeffington. She plans to get married to preserve her family's reputation, but everything goes awry when her brother Trippy is killed in World War I. For Fanny and Job, the following years bring only loss, longing, and self-discovery. Director: Vincent Sherman Cast: Bette Davis, Claude Rains Bette Davis was an American actress of film, television, and theater. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, was the first person to accrue ten Academy Award nominations (and one write-in) for acting, and was the first woman to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. Book Discussion | The Book Against Death: Nobel Winner's Affirmation of Life

Daniel Kehlmann and Peter Filkins on Nobel Prize winner Elias Canetti's The Book Against Death, the work of a lifetime: a collection of Elias Canetti’s powerful, disarming, and often bleakly comic observations, diatribes, musings, and commentaries on and against death. Evoking despair, melancholy, and fury, Canetti examines the inevitable demise of all beings—from the ant, the fish, and the worm to an executioner, a court painter, and a Greek god—while fiercely protesting the mass deaths incurred during war and the willingness of the despot to wield death as power. Interspersed with material from philosophers and writers such as Goethe, Walter Benjamin, and Robert Walser, The Book Against Death is ultimately a moving affirmation of the value of life itself.

Play | All Eight: Teammates and Rivals

In Lilly Camp's play, nine freshmen women have been recruited to a Northeast collegiate rowing team, where every morning at 6am they compete with each other for the best times, lowest body weights, and most influential seats, until race day when they are asked to put it all aside and row together as teammates in one boat. Off the water, their coach shows up at their parties and drinks with them, makes lewd comments about their bodies, and is allegedly sleeping with one of them. Over the course of their freshman year, All Eight examines how the world of collegiate sports drives these young women with varied power to fight to win– races, love, power– at the expense of even each other. A student production.
