Screening | Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project (2019): documentary

Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project is a mystery in the form of a time capsule. It’s about a radical Communist activist, who became a fabulously wealthy recluse archivist. Marion Stokes was secretly recording television twenty-four hours a day for thirty years. It started in 1979 with the Iranian Hostage Crisis at the dawn of the twenty-four hour news cycle. It ended on December 14, 2012 while the Sandy Hook massacre played on television as Marion passed away. In between, Marion recorded on 70,000 VHS tapes, capturing revolutions, lies, wars, triumphs, catastrophes, bloopers, talk shows, and commercials that tell us who we were, and show how television shaped the world of today. Before “fake news” Marion was fighting to protect the truth by archiving everything that was said and shown on television. The public didn’t know it, but the networks were disposing their archives for decades into the trashcan of history

Gallery Talk | Through Lines: Approaching Early German Drawings

Stephanie Buck, Director of the Kupferstich-Kabinett at the Dresden State Art Collections will explore the interstices of some of the museum’s finest early German drawings, among them Dürer’s enigmatic Abduction on Horseback and the Head of an Elderly Man attributed to Sebald Beham. Book Discussion | Disarming Intelligence: Proust, Valery, and Modern French Criticism

In the late nineteenth century, psychologists and philosophers became intensely interested in the possibility of quantifying, measuring, and evaluating “intelligence,” and using it to separate and compare individuals. Disarming Intelligence analyzes how this polyvalent term was consolidated and contested in competing discourses, from fin de siècle psychology and philosophy to literature, criticism, and cultural polemics around the First World War. Author Zakir Paul examines how Marcel Proust, Henri Bergson, Paul Valéry, and the critics of the influential Nouvelle revue française registered, negotiated, and subtly countered the ways intelligence was invoked across the political and aesthetic spectrum.

Lecture | Early Concrete Skyscrapers in Seattle (online)

A look back into the early 20th century with a talk by structural engineer and historian Tyler Sprague on the unique development of concrete skyscrapers in the Pacific Northwest. In the early 1900s, as Seattle grew into a significant urban center for the region, its early high-rises were made of imported structural steel. At the same time, however, advances in reinforced-concrete construction that came about through the increased production of a local, high quality cement in the North Cascades created a low-cost, high-performance building material that Northwest architects and engineers began to apply to high-rise design. Sprague will outline how the combination of new material supply, developing technical expertise, building code changes, and design creativity led to this regional expression in skyscraper history that found its apogee in 1931 with the never-completed 28-story Seattle City Light Tower, a building that would have been one of the tallest reinforced-concrete skyscrapers in the world.

Book Discussion | The Elements of Marie Curie by Dava Sobel (In Person AND Online!)

Nearly a century after her death, Marie Curie remains the only female scientist most people can name. She is the first Nobel laureate to be decorated in two separate fields—physics in 1903 with her husband, Pierre, and chemistry by herself in 1911. In her new biography, The Elements of Marie Curie, Dava Sobel focuses not just on Curie’s legendary genius, but on the 45 women who worked in her lab—from Marguerite Perey, who discovered the element francium, to Curie’s elder daughter, Irene, winner of the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Sobel chronicles Curie’s remarkable life of discovery alongside the lives of the women who followed down the trail she blazed.
