Lecture | “White Slavery” and the Marriage Plot: Ivan Turgenev’s Fathers and Children in the Global Emancipation Era (online)

In the mid-1800s, after Great Britain legally ended the slave trade and abolition was under debate in the United States, foreign commentators accused the Russian Empire of perpetuating “white slavery.” Reckoning on a contradiction of terms, “white slavery” referenced various bonded labor practices, including serfdom, but particularly decried the sexual bondage of white women. Perhaps the most famous artifact of this discourse was Hiram Powers’s 1849 The Greek Slave, a white marble sculpture of a woman in chains with copies around the world—including at a Russian prince’s estate and at the Russian section of the 1851 Great Exhibition in London’s Crystal Palace. In this talk, Yale University's Fiona Bell suggests that the “white slavery” canon includes not just Western objects about Russia, but also Russian cultural objects, looking specifically at Ivan Turgenev’s 1862 novel Fathers and Children as an example of how Russian authors depicted the class violence of serfdom using the western lexicon developed around racialized chattel slavery.

The poems discussed will be from the sections "The Waking, Words for the Wind," and "The Far Field."  Copies of the reading can be downloaded at the link below. Please bring your printed copy to the discussion; participants will be reading aloud and doing close analysis of the poems. Theodore Roethke is considered one of the most important American poets of the 20th century. His work is characterized by its exploration of the natural world, its intense emotionality, and its formal inventiveness. Roethke's poems are often rooted in his own personal experiences, particularly his childhood in Saginaw, Michigan, where his family owned a greenhouse. These early encounters with nature would profoundly shape his poetic vision, providing him with a rich source of imagery and metaphor.

Talk | Becoming Fifth Avenue: 200 Years of Architectural History

An illuminating journey through 200 years of architectural history. On November 1, 1824, Fifth Avenue was born. At the time, the first portion of the avenue, extending from Washington Square North (then "Art Street") to 13th Street, was nothing more than a country road, surrounded by farmland. But a mere quarter century later, Fifth Avenue was already transforming into one of New York City's grandest thoroughfares, lined by opulent mansions for some of the city's wealthiest inhabitants. While most of those original homes have since been demolished in favor of towering 20th-century hotels and apartment buildings, a select few remain in place to this day. Village Preservation's Dena Tasse-Winter and Chloe Gregoire will explore how they uncovered the history of every single building to ever be constructed along lower Fifth Avenue. They'll reveal just how many of the avenue's current buildings have been in place since the beginning, and which others are only the second generation of structures to be constructed there (almost all of them!).

Concert | Electroacoustic Music with Sounds of Nature

Everywhere We Are is the Farthest Place, an iterative soundscape composition, combines an electroacoustic performance with field recordings of glacial geologic activity and oceanographic data Mary Edwards gathered while on an art and science sailing expedition on a research vessel above the 78th parallel in Svalbard. This ode rather than an elegy to the transforming Arctic based on eyewitness accounts of natural events—iceberg torrents, calving glaciers, whale song and converging subterranean rivers—is sonically recreated as a score with intention of “decentralizing the centered and un-othering the others.”

That morning they were instructed to evacuate. In the days and weeks that followed, the arts became a source of solace for the community, offering a way to process the trauma of the attacks. This evening, these musicians reunite to reflect on the events of 9/11 the healing power of music in times of tragedy.

Concert | An Alpine Christmas Concert

A Christmas concert with the Austrian trio Diatonische Expeditionen. On a diatonic expedition, tradition meets innovation. The Austrian trio Diatonische Expeditionen takes listeners on a musical journey through alpine folk music, jazz, pop, classical, and their own compositions. They blend the unique sound of the Styrian button accordion with smooth alto vocals and the full, sparkling ring of a harp. Theresa Lehner, Katharina Baschinger and Alexander Maurer are excited to share a facet of the Austrian musical soul, rich in tradition and diversity, with audiences in the United States. Diatonische Expeditionen, founded in 2017, has performed in various venues, including the jazz club "Porgy & Bess" in Vienna and "Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival" in Germany. Their music has been broadcast by Austrian Radio ORF and featured on national television in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. The trio's music is also fueled by substantial musicianship; all of the musicians have undergone rigorous training at conservatoire level. Notably, Alexander Maurer is the first performer on the Styrian button accordion worldwide to have secured a tenured professorial rank at prestigious Anton Bruckner University in Linz.

Book Discussion | Our Nazi: An American Suburb’s Encounter with Evil (online)

Reinhold Kulle seemed like the perfect school employee. But in 1982, as his retirement neared, his long-concealed secret came to light. The chief custodian at Oak Park and River Forest High School outside Chicago had been a Nazi, a member of the SS, and a guard at a brutal slave labor camp during World War II. Similar revelations stunned communities across the country. As the Office of Special Investigations raced to uncover Hitler’s men in the United States, neighbors had to reconcile horrific accusations with the helpful, kind, and soft-spoken neighbors they thought they knew. Though Nazis loomed in the American consciousness as evil epitomized, in Oak Park—a Chicago suburb renowned for its liberalism—people rose to defend Kulle, a war criminal. In this book, Oak Park and River Forest High School teacher Michael Soffer digs into his community’s tumultuous response to the Kulle affair. He explores the uncomfortable truths of how and why onetime Nazis found allies in American communities after their gruesome pasts were uncovered. Soffer will be in conversation with Hasia R. Diner, professor emeritus of American Jewish History at New York University.

Play | She Kills Monsters: Inside Dungeons and Dragons

Qui Nguyen's play, set in the mid-1990’s, takes viewers inside the fantasy role-playing world of Dungeons and Dragons. High schooler Tilly Evan, an avid D&D player, recently died in a car crash.  Her older sister, Agnes, now a teacher at their high school, discovers Tilly’s D&D notebook. In an attempt to connect with her lost sister, Agnes enlists Tilly’s D&D friends to take her inside the adventure Tilly created. This high-octane comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all. A student production.
