Lecture | “White Slavery” and the Marriage Plot: Ivan Turgenev’s Fathers and Children in the Global Emancipation Era (online)

In the mid-1800s, after Great Britain legally ended the slave trade and abolition was under debate in the United States, foreign commentators accused the Russian Empire of perpetuating “white slavery.” Reckoning on a contradiction of terms, “white slavery” referenced various bonded labor practices, including serfdom, but particularly decried the sexual bondage of white women. Perhaps the most famous artifact of this discourse was Hiram Powers’s 1849 The Greek Slave, a white marble sculpture of a woman in chains with copies around the world—including at a Russian prince’s estate and at the Russian section of the 1851 Great Exhibition in London’s Crystal Palace. In this talk, Yale University's Fiona Bell suggests that the “white slavery” canon includes not just Western objects about Russia, but also Russian cultural objects, looking specifically at Ivan Turgenev’s 1862 novel Fathers and Children as an example of how Russian authors depicted the class violence of serfdom using the western lexicon developed around racialized chattel slavery.

Book Club | Poetry Discussion: Selected Poems of Theodore Roethke

The poems discussed will be from the sections "The Waking, Words for the Wind," and "The Far Field."  Copies of the reading can be downloaded at the link below. Please bring your printed copy to the discussion; participants will be reading aloud and doing close analysis of the poems. Theodore Roethke is considered one of the most important American poets of the 20th century. His work is characterized by its exploration of the natural world, its intense emotionality, and its formal inventiveness. Roethke's poems are often rooted in his own personal experiences, particularly his childhood in Saginaw, Michigan, where his family owned a greenhouse. These early encounters with nature would profoundly shape his poetic vision, providing him with a rich source of imagery and metaphor.

Talk | Becoming Fifth Avenue: 200 Years of Architectural History

An illuminating journey through 200 years of architectural history. On November 1, 1824, Fifth Avenue was born. At the time, the first portion of the avenue, extending from Washington Square North (then "Art Street") to 13th Street, was nothing more than a country road, surrounded by farmland. But a mere quarter century later, Fifth Avenue was already transforming into one of New York City's grandest thoroughfares, lined by opulent mansions for some of the city's wealthiest inhabitants. While most of those original homes have since been demolished in favor of towering 20th-century hotels and apartment buildings, a select few remain in place to this day. Village Preservation's Dena Tasse-Winter and Chloe Gregoire will explore how they uncovered the history of every single building to ever be constructed along lower Fifth Avenue. They'll reveal just how many of the avenue's current buildings have been in place since the beginning, and which others are only the second generation of structures to be constructed there (almost all of them!).

Concert | Electroacoustic Music with Sounds of Nature

Everywhere We Are is the Farthest Place, an iterative soundscape composition, combines an electroacoustic performance with field recordings of glacial geologic activity and oceanographic data Mary Edwards gathered while on an art and science sailing expedition on a research vessel above the 78th parallel in Svalbard. This ode rather than an elegy to the transforming Arctic based on eyewitness accounts of natural events—iceberg torrents, calving glaciers, whale song and converging subterranean rivers—is sonically recreated as a score with intention of “decentralizing the centered and un-othering the others.”

Discussion | Healing Power of Music in Times of Tragedy: Jazz and 9/11

September 11, 2001 marked the first day of classes at The Juilliard School, with students such as jazz trumpeter and composer Dominick Farinacci, saxophonist and educator Erica Von Kleist, and drummer and percussionist Ulysses Owens among the inaugural jazz studies program. That morning they were instructed to evacuate. In the days and weeks that followed, the arts became a source of solace for the community, offering a way to process the trauma of the attacks. This evening, these musicians reunite to reflect on the events of 9/11 the healing power of music in times of tragedy.
