You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. Michael Lambek's book follows the intertwined history of Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Villa Tugendhat and the family who inhabited it from 1930-1938. Part memoir, part social history, the book traces the family from its origins in a Jewish ghetto to the present day, focussing on the author’s maternal grandmother, Grete Tugendhat who commissioned and championed the house, which is now a World Heritage Site in Brno, Czechia. Michael Lambek is Professor and Canada Research Chair emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Toronto and former Professor at the London School of Economics.

Discussion | Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker


Premiering in 1987, Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker adopted elements of the classical 19th-century original by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa and made it distinctly American, setting the narrative in an American household, complete with vintage toys from Joffrey’s own collection. Former Joffrey Ballet dancer Nicole Duffy speaks about Joffrey’s take on the holiday classic The Nutcracker. Having danced in Robert Joffrey’s production for many years, Duffy shares her experiences on the stage along with photos and video from the Jerome Robbins Dance Division. Registration required.

Halloweentown's beloved pumpkin king Jack Skellington has become bored with the same old routine of Halloween. When Jack accidentally finds Christmastown, a town filled with warm spirits and bright colors, his spark returns, and he plans to take control of the newly discovered holiday. Jack kidnaps Santa Claus and takes over the role, but he quickly discovers that even the best laid plans of mice and skeleton men can go wrong. Director: Henry Selick Cast: Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey, Glenn Shadix, Paul Reubens, Ken Page, Ed Ivory Danny Elfman is an American film composer, singer, songwriter, and musician. Elfman has garnered international recognition for composing over 100 feature film scores, as well as compositions for television, stage productions, and the concert hall. Among his honors are four Oscar nominations, three Emmy Awards, a Grammy, and more. Catherine O'Hara is a Canadian-American actress and comedian known for her comedy work on Second City Television (1976-84) and Schitt's Creek (2015-2020) and in films such as After Hours (1985), Beetlejuice (1988), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and the first two installments of the Home Alone franchise (1990-1992).

Museums | Folk Art Tour: Ornamentation, Vibrant Drawings and Over 100 Handmade Gameboards


Join the tour to explore the art of the Shakers from the mid-19th century: colorful intricate ornamentation representing celestial imagery, vibrant drawings and much more. Another exhibition contains about 100 handmade gameboards, including chess, Parcheesi, checkers, Monopoly, Chutes and Ladders crafted between the mid-19 and early-20 centuries. The Shakers are a religious community founded in the 18th century in England. They are known for their unique beliefs, which include celibacy, communal living, and a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and simplicity. They are also recognized for their distinctive style of furniture and architecture, as well as their vibrant music and dance traditions. In the early 20th century, there were about 12 Shaker communities in the US and as of 2019, there is only one active Shaker village remaining, located in Maine.
