The New York Opera Society celebrates the music of George Gershwin and Scott Joplin, featuring renowned soprano Christina Clark, baritone Kenneth Overton and a 1930s Weimar Berlin-style jazz quintet. The program explores the composers' rich legacy with performances of the Jascha Heifetz setting for Porgy and Bess, several seminal pieces by Gershwin, excerpts from Joplin’s treasured opera Treemonisha, and new settings of cherished melodies by Joplin. Accompanied by original projections developed from archival materials from the National Gallery of Art, the musical program illustrates Joplin’s influence on the young Gershwin, and their indelible marks on American music as the respective Kings of Ragtime and American Popular Song.

Screening | Peter Robinson's Documentary Asylum (1972): Rethinking Schizophrenia

R.D. Laing, British author and therapist, has shaken the foundations of traditional psychiatric therapy by treating the schizophrenic experience as a sane response to an insane environment. Robinson and his crew lived in Laing’s therapeutic community in London for six weeks during the spring of 1971. Here is the first filmed record of Laing explaining his theories and the institution that was born of them. There were between fifteen and eighteen people in the community during filming, and it is a tribute to Robinson’s sensitivity and discretion that he was able to capture their lives with a minimum of interference. 95 min. Also showing is Matthew Walker's short John and Karen (2007, 4 min.)

Opening Reception | Exhibition: No Singing Allowed: Flamenco and Photography

Whether as social phenomenon or musical expression, flamenco has been of enduring interest and inspiration to photographers from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. While some photographers from outside of Spain went in search of it or encountered it by chance, to others flamenco and its practitioners are an essential, if not innate, aspect of their cultural heritage and their photographic work. This artistic form—also considered a way of life or being—has generated fascination in cultured urban circles, remaining one of the most secret, mysterious, and seductive manifestations of twentieth-century European popular art. This exhibition of more than one hundred and fifty years of images, frequently taken by foreigners rather than Spaniards, is an extensive survey of how photographers of different eras have approached the universe of flamenco, whether documenting the dance itself, gestures that recall it, or the culture that is developed around it. Divided into two parts, this exhibition features such artists as Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Brassaï, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Francesc Catalá Roca, Inge Morath, Martin Parr, Man Ray, and Miguel Rio Branco. Flamenco dancer Pastora Galván will perform at the opening.

The exhibition focuses on his calligraphic brush and ink paintings and drawings, which have been an important part of his output since 1967.

Recent exhibitions of his work include solo exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery in London, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, de Hallen Haarlem in the Netherlands and the Kunsthalle Basel in Switzerland. As part of the recent Performa 09 festival, van der Werve performed Nummer twaalf live at the Marshall Chess Club in New York, where the scene in the film was shot and legends like Marcel Duchamp and Bobby Fisher were members.
