Workshop | Workshop on Thomas A. Dorsey, “Father of Gospel Music”

The Education Ministry, in collaboration with Echoes of our Ancestors, an African-American music program, will sponsor a workshop depicting Dorsey's accomplishments. Dorsey, the composer of "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and "Peace in the Valley," wrote more than 3,000 songs in his lifetime and was the first African-American to have an independent music company. His collaboration with both Gertrude "Ma" Rainey and Mahalia Jackson helped to establish both women as cultural icons. Now, an interactive workshop to be led by vocalist, music historian and lecturer Tami Tyree, will highlight these and other aspects of his life and music. Tyree will guide you through a program to include archival Dorsey footage, representative recordings, gospel music theory, and performance.
