Lecture | White Rights: What Apartheid South Africa Learned from the United States

Though widely regarded as the most racist regime on earth, the apartheid government in South Africa learned from policies and practices long extant in the United States. Before apartheid was institutionalized, South African social scientists, educators and politicians were among the most astute observers of racial segregation and white supremacy in the U.S. In this lunchtime lecture, Elizabeth Esch shows how white South Africans studied U.S. history and mimicked its practices in implementing apartheid, from so-called anti-miscegenation laws to the pass-book and homeland systems. Esch's work has appeared in Souls: a Critical Journal of Black Politics, Culture and Society; Cabinet: A Quarterly Journal of Art and Culture; and Historical Materialism.

Lecture | New Light on the Origins of the Israel-Palestine Conflict

In this presentation, Victor Kattan, Teaching Fellow at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, traces the roots of the Israel-Palestine conflict back to the Jewish Question in the nineteenth century. He explains that British support for Zionism was intimately linked to antisemitism and notions of ‘Jewish power’ and that the British Mandate of Palestine (1922-1948) was primarily an experiment in demographic engineering related to British immigration policy. Kattan argues that support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine was contrary to the emerging principle of self-determination which directly led to the dispute and violence that exists today. Kattan was a Research Fellow in Public International Law at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law on their Human Rights in International Law and Iran project from 2006-8. Prior to this, he was a Director with the London based media watchdog Arab Media Watch where he also worked as a journalist, an adviser and a researcher. He is the author of more than half a dozen scholarly articles on the Arab-Israeli conflict in international law journals. His book is From Coexistence to Conquest: International Law and the Origins of the Arab-Israeli Conflict.

Opening Reception | 2 Shows: Christina Mazzalupo's Stomachache / Travis LeRoy Southworth's Where I End and You Begin #3

During the summer of 2009, a few months before her 40th birthday, Mazzalupo decided to record her daily routines. She included emotions experienced, medications and supplements taken, fears, and travels. She also noted various decisions and significant topics that arose. For the show, the results of her extensive, pseudoscientific data collection are translated into eight drawings — one to represent each week. These are accompanied by interpretive oil paintings and sketches. A site-specific window installation by Southworth is his first solo project in New York City. Growing up in a military family, Southworth developed an interest in shifting space, both physical and emotional. Working as a photo-retoucher, he eliminated imperfections such as blemishes, shadows, dust and the other unsavory elements in photographic portraits. As an artist, he combines those two very disparate parts of his life to make artwork that moves beyond conventional representation and redefines portraiture.

Workshop | Creative Workshop: To Be Continued (at the Point of Abandon)

This collaborative workshop will explore a particular point in the creative process that we have all likely encountered: the breaking point, the point of abandon. During each class, the unfinished project will serve as a point of departure as well as a point of contention. Each period will begin with a guest who will present one of his or her own abandoned endeavors, discussing initial goals and reasons for giving up. After this presentation the guest will leave the class, willingly handing over the incomplete project. The work then becomes the charge of the group, and together participants will continue this project however they see fit.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Anders Ruhwald's Temperance!

Danish-born artist Ruhwald has been creating ceramic objects shaped in forms long associated with household objects (i.e. lamp, vase, mirror) but not intended to be used as such. Ruhwald attempts to liberate these forms from their subordinating role as utilitarian objects and allow them to quietly but mischievously interact with the viewer. His investigations shed a new light on the nominative role certain objects play in the navigation of our daily lives. Ruhwald lives and works in London and Detroit. Solo exhibitions include "The state of things" at The Museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen, Denmark, "You in Between" at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art in the UK as well as various gallery solo-shows in Stockholm, London, Copenhagen, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Brussels.

Lecture | Ubi Inletabilitas Ibi Virtus: Melancholy, Virtue and Self-Consciousness

A seventeenth century print by Giovanni Castiglione bears a motto: Ubi Inletabilitas Ibi Virtus. Its meaning is far from clear. What is inletabilitas? What exactly is its relation to virtue? To what broader psychological theory and moral theory does the thought in the motto belong? Wayne Martin draws on a range of resources - from phenomenology, from art history, from the ontology of Renaissance psychiatry - to propose and explore an answer. Inletabilitas, I argue, is a distinctive form of melancholic self-consciousness. It is associated closely with grief and mourning, and with other forms of awareness in which one gains a perspective on hermeneutic totalities.
