Hike | West Harbor Walk

For approximately 19-20 miles (8-9 hours) at a moderate-brisk pace, follow the lesser known Western shore of New York Harbor through the cities of Jersey City and Bayonne, where you will explore Liberty State Park and its historic rail terminal; pass the site of the 1916 Black Tom Explosion, follow boardwalks over old docklands and through restored wetlands with many shorebirds; pass shipping cranes on the shore of Newark Bay; cross the Bayonne Bridge; and pass through the former sailors' home at Snug Harbor, ending at the Staten Island Ferry terminal at St. George (for ferry service back to Manhattan). This new-and-improved West Harbor Walk will take you over several new boardwalks and promenades completed in 2009. As the walk parallels Hudson-Bergen Light Rail for the first 12 miles, walkers interested in joining for part of the walk may take the train back to Hoboken Terminal at several points. Stop briefly for lunch in Bayonne at noon at an intersection with several lunch options (fast food, diner, deli). Go in any weather.

Screening | 2 Documentaries by Polish Director Miroslaw Dembinski: The Orange Alternative / Dwarves Go to Ukraine

The Orange Alternative (1988), made by Dembinski while still a student at the legendary Film School in Lodz, won him First Prize at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival in 1989, among other awards. It documents a street happening by the Orange Alternative – a social movement that was born in Wroclaw and soon spread to other Polish cities, becoming a cult phenomenon that would go down in the annals of Polish political opposition. 23 min. Dwarves Go to Ukraine (pictured, 2005) is a moving account of a political action organized by the Orange Alternative Dwarves. To both support and participate in the historic moments of the “Orange Revolution” in Ukraine in 2004, the members of the Polish Orange Alternative embark on a journey from Warsaw to Kiev. On the way, in their orange bus, they knit an extraordinarily long orange scarf – a symbolic gesture, initiated in Warsaw by the Ukrainian pop star Ruslana Lyzenko, to demonstrate the rekindling of Polish-Ukrainian friendship. 55 min. Their screening will be introduced by Elzbieta Matynia, Associate Professor of Sociology and Liberal Studies at The New School for Social Research.

Workshop | Creative Workshop: Play

This activity-based course engages with the concept of open-ended play and the imagination as a generative tool. It is based on the conviction that play is a necessary part of life and that we don’t do enough of it. We sacrifice play on a daily basis in pursuit of work and ambitions, stress, life maintenance. As such the course looks at the philosophies of Dewey, Pierce, Gardner, Waldorf, Amish forms of play, Steiner, et al. We’ll also look at the pedagogy of play and kinder-garden [“children’s garden”] where play and nature combine into learning. During class sessions, participants will engage in activities that question the role of play.
