Author Reading | Maria Balinksa reads from her book The Bagel: The Surprising History of a Modest Bread

If smoked salmon and cream cheese bring only one thing to mind, you can count yourself among the world’s millions of bagel mavens. But few are aware of the bagel’s provenance, let alone its adventuresome history. Journalist Balinska tells a story of surprising connections between a cheap bread and centuries of Polish, Jewish, and American history. From 17th century Poland and the Yiddish-speaking communities of Eastern Europe, the story moves to the bakeries of the Lower East Side, where small-business owners cooking for their communities eventually spawned a nationwide bagel craze.

Talk | Why She Can't Throw the Bum Out: What Keeps People Stuck in Bad Relationships

With Elizabeth Zelvin, LCSW, psychotherapist and mystery writer, author of Death Will Help You Leave Him. Why do people stay in bad relationships? Why do so many of us pick partners who are unavailable emotionally, physically, or legally? Why does anybody love somebody who's abusive or addicted? There are several good clinical reasons, having nothing to do with reason, intelligence, or common sense, why it's so hard for many to stop loving people who are bad for them. The problem is compounded by what our culture tells us about love. Everybody wants the kind of love we see in movies and hear about in popular songs. But that expectation often leads to chronic dissatisfaction with the relationships we have and a tendency to choose unwisely in seeking the love we want.

Discussion | Did Charlie Chaplin Steal from René Clair's A nous la Liberté?

When Charles Chaplin's Modern Times premiered in 1936, the "little tramp" was accused of plagiarism by Tobis, the distribution company of René Clair's film À nous la liberté from 1931. Both films are satirical comments on the fight between man and machine, between a philosophical life in freedom versus the ideology of big business and its dehumanizing assembly line. Clair follows the fortunes of two ex-cons. One makes it to the top of industry, the other a tramp living on park benches. Clair suggests that the worker at the assembly line is no more free than the embittered prisoner. After screening excerpts from Modern Times and À nous la liberté, they will discuss whether Chaplin did plagiarize Clair. Special Guest Moderator: Jens Ulffmaller
